Mattingly became manager of the Marlins after the 2015 season. He leaves as the second longest-tenured manager in the National League after Craig Counsell of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2022\/04\/06\/2022-milwaukee-brewers-season-preview\/\" target=\"_self\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a>. Mattingly&#8217;s contract is up at the end of the season, and he has chosen not to re-sign for the 2023 season. During those seven seasons, he oversaw notable names in the major leagues such as Giancarlo Stanton, Christian Yelich, Marcell Ozuna, Ichiro Suzuki, J.T. Realmuto, and Jose Fernandez. He inherited a team built to be a contender, but they fell short of expectations.\u201cWhen I first came to Miami and looked at that team, I thought \u2018Man, we\u2019ve got a chance\u2019 when you look at the names that we had put together,\u201d Mattingly said <a href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/sports\/mlb\/miami-marlins\/article266076706.html?taid=633074de09496e0001ea57c7&amp;utm_campaign=trueanthem&amp;utm_medium=social&amp;utm_source=twitter\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">previously<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>Bruce Sherman Era<\/h2>\n<p>Mattingly was manager before the Bruce Sherman ownership era in 2017. He has overseen a team in a rebuild for five straight seasons. While there have been new emerging talents such as Jazz Chisholm Jr. and Sandy Alcantara, they have not been able to defeat the powerhouses in the National League East. Mattingly led the Marlins to their first playoff birth in 2020, ending a seventeen-year drought for the franchise.<\/p>\n<p>The Marlins as an organization have seen a significant turnover in the last few years. Since 2020, the Marlins have replaced their General Manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2022\/02\/28\/derek-jeter-miami-marlins-resigns\/\" target=\"_self\">CEO<\/a>, and now a manager. It is uncertain who will replace Don Mattingly in 2023. It is also uncertain what the future holds for the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tsn.ca\/don-mattingly-not-returning-as-miami-marlins-manager-in-2023-1.1853552\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">61-year-old former<\/a> World Series winner. After that, four games in Milwaukee against the Brewers.
