The 22-year old third baseman will reportedly be heading to Atlanta to join the New York Mets in a crucial series. In six games at Triple-A Syracuse, Baty posted a .364/.462/.364 slash line. This move comes after starter Eduardo Escobar was scratched from Tuesday night’s lineup. This is likely due to a lingering side issue that he felt on Friday night. On top of that, utility man Luis Guillorme will be out for the next 4-6 weeks with a groin strain. This left the Mets with Deven Marrero, who is Escobar’s replacement in Tuesday night’s lineup vs the division rival Atlanta Braves.

Background on Brett Baty

Baty was selected 12th overall by the New York Mets in the 2019 MLB Draft. He rose quickly in the Mets farm system, becoming the second-ranked Mets prospect on MLB.com, only behind Francisco Alvarez who is the number one prospect in all of baseball. Scouts have expressed that they aren’t quite sure if Baty’s defensive skills are Major League caliber yet. His bat, however, almost certainly is. In his three seasons in MiLB, Baty slashed .289/.390/.493. Baty certainly has the potential to prove the skeptics on his defense wrong though, in 3 seasons he posted a .916 fielding percentage.

He also gives the Mets another option in the outfield if the need arises. Throughout his minor league career, Baty gained experience in left field. He is also known for having some power. However, he can most definitely improve on that aspect of his game. His slugging percentage throughout his minor league career is .493. Baty has immense talent that will likely be improved upon as he makes his way into the big leagues. Some of his abilities may still be a little raw, but there’s no reason why he can’t contribute to the Mets’ pennant race over the rest of the season.

Main Photo:
Embed from Getty Images

Players Mentioned:

Brett Baty, Eduardo Escobar, Luis Guillorme, Deven Marrero, Francisco Alvarez

According to multiple reports, Brett Baty is on his way to the big leagues.
