Most recently, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Justin Verlander<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Cy Young Award) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yordan Alvarez<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (AL ROTY) won two of the three awards in 2019 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/category\/astros\/\" target=\"_self\">Houston Astros<\/a>. Verlander was part of a tandem in 2013 with <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Miguel Cabrera<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MVP) while with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/category\/tigers\/\" target=\"_self\">Detroit Tigers<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2022\/06\/30\/padres-diamondbacks-20220629\/\" target=\"_self\">San Diego Padres<\/a> currently have three players on their team building individual cases to become the first set of teammates to complete the sweep. Starting pitchers <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Musgrove<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mackenzie Gore<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> have emerged as candidates for the Cy Young and NL ROTY, respectively. Third baseman <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manny Machado<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is having an MVP-caliber season and is on pace for the best season of his career. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are how the three Padres measure up for their respective awards.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Joe Musgrove\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musgrove will be a free agent at the end of the season, and the message sent to the league is that his services will not come cheap when, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/calltothepen.com\/2022\/07\/02\/san-diego-padres-joe-musgrove-destined-free-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and if<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he hits the free agent market. A San Diego native, Musgrove has already solidified a hometown legacy. He is the first and only Friar to throw a no-hitter. He came close to throwing his second career no-no in 2022. The story as to why it didn\u2019t happen is \u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/joe-musgrove-flirts-with-his-second-no-hitter\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">fascinating<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Musgrove currently has a 2.25 ERA, third in the National League behind <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandy Alcantara<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1.95) and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tony Gonsolin<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (1.54). He\u2019s on pace to post career bests in ERA, and FIP (currently 3.10), and could set a personal best for strikeouts (203). He currently has 92 through 14 starts. Despite these numbers, he appears as a dark horse at best in the eyes of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/features\/cyyoung\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experts<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Manny Machado\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/10035540-an-early-look-at-mlbs-mvp-and-cy-young-races-for-2022-season\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">currently leads<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the National League MVP race. He missed a handful of games in June with an ankle injury, something that hasn\u2019t impacted his standing (no pun intended) going forward. He\u2019s on pace for not just an MVP season, but maybe the best season of his career.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Machado is currently hitting .318\/.392\/.528\/.920. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/category\/cardinals\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> first baseman <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Paul Goldschmidt<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has a higher quadruple slash line (.340\/.422\/.620\/1.042). At the same time, Machado has played seven fewer games. San Diego\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/padres-end-homestand-4-3-without-manny-machado\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">record without Machado<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in those games \u2014 4\u20133.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also in the MVP race is Cardinals third baseman <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nolan Arenado<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Goldschmidt and Arenado have each played 78 games in the same lineup this season. Machado is carrying the Padres without their presumed MVP candidate, shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., who has been recovering from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/33520255\/san-diego-padres-fernando-tatis-jr-surgery-broken-left-wrist\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrist surgery<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> since the start of the season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>Mackenzie Gore\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Selected No. 3 overall in the 2017 MLB First Year Player Draft, Gore debuted in 2022. The left-hander saw a couple of rocky starts in June (again, no pun intended) against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/category\/rockies\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Rockies<\/a>, giving up 14 runs over the two outings. His ERA sits at 3.18 as a result of this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/dictionary\/orogeny\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orogeny<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><b>What Could Happen?\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tricky thing about predicting season awards is that we, as humans, can\u2019t see into the future. According to reports, Machado has the best chance of coming away with anything out of these three. Gore could revert back to having a sub-2.00 ERA. Musgrove could throw more scoreless outings.
