Even more telling of their tremendous trades is the depth they&#8217;ve added along the way. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Friars added <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/snellbl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blake Snell<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/darviyu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yu Darvish<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/musgrjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joe Musgrove<\/strong><\/a> to their pitching rotation, which broke all of baseball\u2019s headlines. They speculated ideas regarding <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatisfe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fernando Tatis Jr.&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0extension, which filled plenty of Twitter feeds. Yet, the best news might revolve around these utility men: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=kim---001ha-&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ha-Seong Kim<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/profaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jurickson Profar<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/croneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jake Cronenworth<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few reasons why these players are key elements in the Padres\u2019 pursuit for the postseason in 2021.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Ha-Seong Kim Can Do It All<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Padres signed infielder Ha-Seong Kim to a four year, $28 million contract last month. The corners of the infield belong to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/machama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Manny Machado<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hosmeer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eric Hosmer<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and Tatis owns shortstop. We don\u2019t yet know what position Kim will fill, but he&#8217;s a valuable asset everywhere.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim has seven years of experience at all four infield positions in the Korean Baseball Organization (KBO). However, his consistently high fielding percentages at shortstop and third base since 2014 make him an ideal candidate for second base. He could also see time in the outfield, or rotate into different infield positions as the season progresses. Depending on where Kim\u2019s arm strength is by the time Spring Training rolls around, the Padres could potentially utilize him at every spot on the diamond.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anything Kim\u2019s glove can do, his bat can do better. He posted <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">career-high batting averages<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the last two seasons in the KBO, and hit 30 home runs, and stole 23 bases during the 2020 campaign.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The average velocity for a fastball in the majors is roughly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.fangraphs.com\/a-quick-comparison-of-historical-kbo-and-mlb-trends\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4.5 mph faster<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> than that in the KBO. This means that Kim might have to adjust to faster pitching before his impact at the plate is truly felt. His speed on the base path and golden glove should boost his use until then.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jake Cronenworth Is as Versatile as It Gets<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NL Rookie of the Year runner-up is a vital part of the Padres\u2019 lineup. Even though the second half of last year\u2019s season looked grim for Cronenworth, his first half was electric. He posted a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/croneja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.194 OPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and reached the bases in nearly 50% of his at-bats. His left-handed bat could be especially useful <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if the league decides to keep the designated hitter this year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cronenworth played every position in the infield aside from pitcher and catcher last season (though he can pitch in a pinch if absolutely necessary). With the addition of Kim to the middle infield, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caratvi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Victor Caratini<\/strong><\/a> available to support Hosmer at first base, Cronenworth will likely add depth to the outfield this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Jurickson Profar Is Back for More<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The guy that those other guys will likely share time with is Jurickson Profar. Late last week, San Diego signed Profar to a three-year contract at $21 million. He\u2019s one of the more beloved Padres, not only for his beaming smile but also for his small-ball style of play and speed around the bags.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Profar is another defensive player that can really do everything. He spent most of his time last season in left field while <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/phamth01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tommy Pham<\/strong><\/a> was injured, but he can play right field, center field, and all four infield positions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fans may only remember Profar for his RBI double to beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/colorado-rockies\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Rockies<\/a> in the bottom of the ninth last September. But the Padres signed him to do just that\u2013come off of the bench and produce runs. He has the ability to get on base, move runners over, and turn singles into doubles and triples. He also has a cannon from the outfield that can throw out anyone eager enough to score on him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, the Padres have stars returning in eight of their starting positions (with prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/campulu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Luis Campusano<\/strong><\/a> looking to fill in behind the plate). Unlike last year\u2019s shortened 60-game sprint, the upcoming campaign will be a 162-game marathon.
