However, there have been a few exceptions over the years. Former players such as <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/santajo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Johan Santana<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bautijo02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jos\u00e9 Bautista<\/strong><\/a><span class=\"ILfuVd NA6bn\"><span class=\"hgKElc\"><span class=\"ILfuVd\"> were Rule 5 picks at one time, and they went on to be successful major league players. For those who are wondering, <a href=\"http:\/\/m.mlb.com\/glossary\/transactions\/rule-5-draft\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">here<\/a> are some rules regarding the Rule 5 Draft. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"ILfuVd NA6bn\"><span class=\"hgKElc\"><span class=\"ILfuVd\">This year, the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/new-york-mets\/\" target=\"_self\">New York Mets<\/a> used the Rule 5 Draft to add minor league depth. Here is a look at what the organization did.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Mets Additions<\/h2>\n<p>During the minor league part of the draft, the Mets selected center fielder <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fergus000dre&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Drew Ferguson<\/strong><\/a>. The 28-year-old has a career .293 average in four seasons. He batted .281 with the Triple-A Round Rock Express in 2019. Next, the Mets selected 27-year-old right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=dillon000jus&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Justin Dillon<\/strong><\/a>. Dillon most recently played with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/toronto-blue-jays\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/a>\u00a0High-A affiliate in 2019, posting a 3.90 ERA in 13 games.<\/p>\n<p>Additionally, the Mets added some infield depth with shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=jacksdr01,jackso005dre&amp;search=Drew+Jackson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drew Jackson<\/a><\/strong>. Jackson had a brief stint in the big leagues in 2019, playing three games with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/baltimore-orioles\/\" target=\"_self\">Baltimore Orioles<\/a>. In the same year, he batted .209 in Triple-A. Right-hander <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=reyesje01,reyes-008jes,reyes-007jes&amp;search=Jesus+Reyes&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesus Reyes<\/a><\/strong> was the next addition. The 27-year-old from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/category\/reds\/\" target=\"_self\">Cincinnati Reds<\/a> organization also had a brief stint in the major leagues. He has a lifetime 3.67 ERA in the minors. The last addition was left-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=zorril000jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jose Zorrilla<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0who has a lifetime 5.00 ERA over 62 games in the minors.<\/p>\n<h2>Mets Losses<\/h2>\n<p>During the major league part of the draft, the Mets selected <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=oviedo000lui\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Luis Oviedo<\/strong><\/a>,\u00a0a 21-year-old right-hander out of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/cleveland-indians\/\" target=\"_self\">Cleveland Indians<\/a> farm system. They traded him to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/pittsburgh-pirates\/\" target=\"_self\">Pittsburgh Pirates<\/a> for cash considerations. Oviedo has been pitching since 2016 and has a lifetime 4.66 ERA. He hasn&#8217;t pitched above Single-A in his career. The team also lost a former top-20 prospect in the organization, right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=nunez-000ded&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dedniel Nunez<\/strong><\/a>. Nunez has a career 4.47 ERA in 37 games in the minors.<\/p>\n<p>In addition, second baseman <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=espino000seb&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sebastian Espino<\/strong><\/a> was lost in the draft. The 20-year-old has a career .259 average in the minors. Catcher\/first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=astudi003wil&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wilfred Astudillo<\/a><\/strong> was the fourth player the team lost. Astudillo is 20 years old and has a career .274 average in the minors. Right-hander <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=zabale000eze&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ezequiel Zabaleta<\/strong><\/a> departed through the draft.
