In 23 and two-thirds innings, Rosenthal posted a 1.90 ERA and struck out 14.5 batters per nine innings. Both are the best rates of his career. Rosenthal was especially dominant after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/2020\/08\/padres-nearing-deal-for-trevor-rosenthal.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">being traded<\/a> to San Diego. As\u00a0 a Padre, he struck out 17 batters in 10 innings without allowing an earned run. Should his effectiveness continue into his 30\u2019s, Rosenthal will continue to be an important major league bullpen piece. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosenthal, a hard-throwing right-hander, <a href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/trevor-rosenthal-572096?stats=statcast-r-pitching-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">mixes<\/a> a fastball that sits around 98 mph with a slider and a changeup. He came up with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/st-louis-cardinals\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> and established himself at the back end of their bullpen in 2013. After an All-Star 2015 season, an elbow injury caused him to tail off. After <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnto01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tommy John<\/strong><\/a> surgery and brief stints with three other teams, he signed with Kansas City for the 2020 season. Rosenthal had a terrific bounce-back season, putting his career back on track. Now, Rosenthal will look to ink a deal with a team needing some back-end bullpen help. Here are five potential destinations for Trevor Rosenthal.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Philadelphia Phillies<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With an alarming 7.06 bullpen ERA, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/philadelphia-phillies\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> had the worst bullpen in baseball last year. For a team that finished merely a game out of a playoff spot, this is a glaring weakness that needs fixing. With the contracts of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/workmbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brandon Workman<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hunteto02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tommy Hunter<\/strong><\/a> coming off the books, this offseason provides a clear opportunity for Philadelphia to upgrade its bullpen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Rosenthal would be a top-notch closing option to go alongside <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nerishe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Hector Neris<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parkebl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blake Parker<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> At the very least, he would boost manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/girarjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joe Girardi&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0confidence in his team closing out ball games. Adding a guy like Rosenthal could make Philadelphia a true NL East contender in the near future.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houston Astros<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/houston-astros\/\" target=\"_self\">Houston Astros<\/a>&#8216; bullpen put together a surprisingly good season last year, considering closer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/osunaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Roberto Osuna&#8217;s<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0injury issues forced him to miss nearly the whole season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pressry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Pressly<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scruban01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Andre Scrubb<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/taylobl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Blake Taylor<\/strong><\/a> were among the pitchers who picked up the slack, resulting in a reliever ERA of 4.39, around league average. Houston should be eyeing an arm to bolster this young bullpen, and Trevor Rosenthal could be the man for the job. Pressly was the best of the bunch saving 75% of his chances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosenthal would become the top dog in the Houston bullpen right away. Rosenthal would be a veteran, lockdown closer to seal games in Houston.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego Padres<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Padres acquired Rosenthal at the 2020 trade deadline, and the move paid off. This offseason, however, Rosenthal and closer <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yateski01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kirby Yates<\/strong><\/a> enter free agency, leaving the San Diego bullpen in flux. Bringing Rosenthal back would be crucial if Yates moves on.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Padres had a strong bullpen in 2020 behind a committee which included <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pomerdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Drew Pomeranz<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strahma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Matt Strahm<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paganem01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Emilio<\/strong> <strong>Pagan<\/strong><\/a>. San Diego had the highest reliever win percentage in the NL, indicating an ability to keep games close and finish them off effectively. Rosenthal added consistency and depth to the bullpen. The Padres bullpen was one of the best in baseball down the stretch. With the Padres hoping to compete again in 2021, securing Trevor Rosenthal as the closer makes a lot of sense.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona Diamondbacks<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/arizona-diamondbacks\/\" target=\"_self\">Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a> traded away <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bradlar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Archie Bradley<\/strong><\/a> at the 2020 trade deadline, leaving a major hole at closer. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crichst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stefan Crichton<\/strong><\/a> filled in nicely converting five saves in seven opportunities. The Diamondbacks bullpen was below average in both ERA (4.60) and strikeouts to walk ratio (1.94). Upgrading the bullpen will be a top priority for Arizona this offseason, and Rosenthal seems like a reasonable man to target.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arizona could pair Rosenthal with Crichton to form a dominant 1-2 punch at the back end of the bullpen. If both guys pitch to their shown potential, the Arizona bullpen could go from mediocre to one of the better units in the NL.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle Mariners<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/seattle-mariners\/\" target=\"_self\">Seattle Mariners<\/a> had the worst bullpen ERA (5.92) and strikeout to walk ratio (1.63) in the AL in 2020. After sending <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=willita01,willia001tay&amp;search=Taylor+Williams&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Taylor Williams<\/strong><\/a> to San Diego in August, the Mariners will be looking for a closer this winter. Trevor Rosenthal would be a good option to shore up a weak Seattle bullpen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seattle was only two games behind Houston for the second AL West playoff spot in 2020. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lewisky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kyle Lewis<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=gonzama02,gonzal020mar&amp;search=Marco+Gonzales&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Marco Gonzales<\/strong><\/a> leading the offense and pitching, respectively, the Mariners aren\u2019t far off from competing in the AL. Signing Trevor Rosenthal would bolster the roster and give Seattle a more complete team going into the 2021 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Final thoughts<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Free-agent Trevor Rosenthal is a relatively safe option for any team in need of bullpen help. In 2020, he rejuvenated his career and showed that he can be one of the more dominant relievers in baseball. Aside from these five teams, Rosenthal is a fit for many more. Relief pitchers are hard to predict.
