Thus is the plight of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/oakland-athletics\/\" target=\"_self\">Oakland A&#8217;s.<\/a> The team that invented small market guerilla tactics enters the offseason with that process intact and their course set.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Money Talks<\/h2>\r\n<p>Only one player on the roster qualifies as a big-money player and that&#8217;s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/daviskh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Khris Davis<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> The designated hitter heads into the last year of the two-year, $33.5M contract extension he signed in 2019. Davis has scuffled the past two seasons (25 HR, 85 RBI, 566 AB combined 19&#8217;\/20&#8242;) mostly due to injury. He turns 33 just before Christmas and is likely gunning for the last big contract of his career. The Oakland Faithful could very well be in for a return to the 40+ HR days of Khrush Davis.<br \/><br \/>The only other significant earners on the A&#8217;s roster are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/piscost01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stephen Piscotty<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diekmja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jake Diekman<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Piscotty has two years left on the extension he signed in 2017 at $7.5M each. Diekman has the team on the hook for $4M in 2021.<\/p>\r\n<h2>More Puzzle Pieces<\/h2>\r\n<p>Another annual ritual the A&#8217;s have become accustomed to is arbitration hearings. The 2021 season will be no different as nine players on the roster are eligible for the process. Other mainstays like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/laurera01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ramon Laureano<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/trivilo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Lou Trivino<\/strong><\/a> are cued up and ready to take their places in the arbitration pipeline next year.<\/p>\r\n<h2>Plugging the Latest Hole<\/h2>\r\n<p>The departure of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/semiema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Marcus Semien<\/strong><\/a> means that if right now a ground ball is hit to Matt Chapman&#8217;s left, no one will be there to catch it. Barring an uncharacteristic free agent signing of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmoan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Andrelton Simmons<\/strong><\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Didi Gregorius<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> the solution will come from within the organization. The A&#8217;s believe they have just the guy in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/machivi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Vimael Machin<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> a Rule Five selection the team purchased from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/philadelphia-phillies\/\" target=\"_self\">Philadelphia Phillies<\/a> last year. The 27-year old from Puerto Rico made his big league debut in 2020 with a .206\/.296\/.238\/.534 slash line in 63 at-bats. But the VCU product has a history through college and the minors of struggling when first promoted, then finding his way to success. Machin&#8217;s 2019 slash line from AAA Iowa was .295\/.390\/.412\/.802. Look for the A&#8217;s to give a long look at Machin in spring training.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Plan B for shortstop falls to a rotation\/mixture of Pinder, Kemp, and possibly rookie <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/neusesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sheldon Neuse<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Neuse is a third baseman by trade but has seen some time at short in the minors. But at 230 pounds, Neuse isn&#8217;t a likely long-term fix at shortstop.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>Minors to Majors<\/h2>\r\n<p>Young players will always be the staple of the A&#8217;s as long as their situation is the same. The catching triumvirate of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=murphse01,murphy009sea&amp;search=Sean+Murphy&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sean Murphy<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=allenau01,allen-003aus,allen-002aus&amp;search=Austin+Allen&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Allen<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/heimjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jonah Heim<\/strong><\/a> has 303 major league at-bats between them. Most fans forget just how young Olson and Chapman really are (26 and 27 respectively). And pitchers in their 30&#8217;s are limited to Bassitt and Diekman.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Filling the other needs of the club will undoubtedly fall to young players coming up from the minors. Luckily, the A&#8217;s do this for a living and their farm system has a bevy of players on the cusp of the big leagues. The pitching staff needs another regular starter and at least two relievers so <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kaprija01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>James Kaprielian<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jeffeda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Daulton Jefferies<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=holmes000gra&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Holmes<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=romero003lui&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Miguel<\/strong> <strong>Romero<\/strong><\/a> should get their opportunities to make the big league roster. There will be at-bats available in the outfield and that&#8217;s where <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=barrer000lui&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Luis Barrera<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=deichm000gre&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Greg Deichmann<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brownse01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Brown<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/boltsk01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Skye Bolt<\/strong><\/a> could get their shots.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<p>Further down the road names like Robert Puason, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=soders000tyl\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tyler Soderstrom<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=allenni01,allen-003nic&amp;search=Nick+Allen&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nick Allen<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=davids000log&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Logan Davidson<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=diaz--007jor&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jordan Diaz<\/a>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=criswe000jef&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jeff Criswell<\/strong><\/a> will likely make their ways onto the A&#8217;s roster.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h2>2021 Outlook<\/h2>\r\n<p>The A&#8217;s have some lineup and roster spots to fill, but that&#8217;s really nothing new. General Manager David Forst and manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/melvibo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Bob Melvin<\/strong><\/a> always seem to have enough pixie dust to sprinkle and magic beans to plant that gets the job done. Free agency really isn&#8217;t their style, although mid-market relievers always seem to find their way to Oakland. So don&#8217;t be surprised to see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/workmbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brandon Workman<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maytr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trevor May<\/strong><\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jeffrje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jeremy Jeffress<\/strong><\/a> in a yellow jersey come opening day. Otherwise, non-tenders and Rule Five draftees along with the odd DFA that catches their attention will fill out their roster. And the A&#8217;s will out-play, out-hustle and out-perform their big-spending opponents in the American League West division once again.
