The 31-year-old posted an 0-1 record with a 3.42 ERA in five starts and two relief appearances last season for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/san-francisco-giants\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco Giants<\/a>. He will join an Atlanta rotation that is led by lefty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/friedma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Fried<\/a><\/strong>, who finished fifth in the NL <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngcy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cy Young<\/a><\/strong> Award voting, and rookie sensation <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderia01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Anderson<\/a><\/strong>. The Braves are also expecting to get <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sorokmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Soroka<\/a><\/strong> back from an Achilles injury, which caused him to miss the majority of the 2020 campaign. A potential rotation of Fried, Anderson, Soroka, Smyly, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wrighky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Wright<\/a><\/strong> certainly gives Atlanta a great chance at winning their fourth consecutive NL East title.<\/p>\n<p>With that said, Smyly does come with an injury history, as he had <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy John<\/a><\/strong> surgery in 2017 and spent most of the 2018 season recovering. The Arkansas native struggled in his first season back in 2019. He proceeded to post a 4-7 record with a 6.24 ERA in 21 starts and four relief appearances with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/texas-rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">Texas Rangers<\/a> and<a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/philadelphia-phillies\/\" target=\"_self\"> Philadelphia Phillies<\/a>. However, the Braves will hope that he can replicate last season&#8217;s success when he limited opposing hitters to a .198\/.261\/.297 line and struck out 42 batters in 26 1\/3 innings.<\/p>\n<p>Atlanta will hope this deal works out better than last season&#8217;s signing of left-handed starter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cole Hamels<\/a><\/strong>.
