Perhaps the largest unknown in the class, and maybe in free agency as a whole, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/oakland-athletics\/\" target=\"_self\">Oakland Athletics<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shortstop <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/semiema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Semien<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After finishing third in the AL MVP voting in 2019, launching 33 home runs, and hitting .285, Semien struggled mightily in 2020, batting .223 and posting a .679 OPS. The .679 OPS is a .203 drop from his 2019 season. On the defensive side, Semien had -5 defensive runs saved, following his +12 performance in 2019.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his 2020 campaign, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Semien\u2019s agent <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sfchronicle.com\/athletics\/article\/Marcus-Semien-s-agent-believes-A-s-shortstop-15720730.php\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">still believes<\/a> that he can garner a $100 million contract<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in a relatively weak class, highlighted by<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Didi Gregorius<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simmoan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andrelton Simmons<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Here are five potential free agent fits for Marcus Semien.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Five Possible Landing Spots for Marcus Semien<\/b><\/h2>\n<h3><b>1. Cincinnati Reds<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/cincinnati-reds\/\" target=\"_self\">Cincinnati Reds<\/a> \u2019 general manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/reds\/news\/nick-krall-on-reds-priorities-in-2020-offseason\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Krall mentioned<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the biggest need for Cincinnati is the shortstop position. Last season, Reds\u2019 shortstops produced the lowest WAR in the major leagues with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/galvifr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freddy Galvis<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and prospect <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=garcijo02,garcijo01,garcia051jos,garcia035jos,garcia059jos,garcia020jos,garcia049jos,garcia055jos,garcia058jos,garcia057jos&amp;search=Jos\u00e9+Garc\u00eda&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Garcia<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> playing a large role. Galvis struggled throughout the season, hitting .220, and Garcia, who has yet to play above the high-A level in the minor leagues, batted .194 with 26 strikeouts to one walk. The Reds need an impact bat in the lineup, evident by their inability to score a run in the wild card series against the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/atlanta-braves\/\" target=\"_self\">Atlanta Braves<\/a><b>. <\/b><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/farmeky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Farmer<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> could also be an option this offseason.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite his agent&#8217;s beliefs, Semien can be a \u201cbuy low\u201d candidate for the Reds on a one or two-year deal to see if he can find his 2019 form or at least provide a bridge towards Garcia or a big-name free agent in 2021. It may also be of interest for Semien on a one-year deal in the odd offseason, with the noted financial restrictions for many teams. In a lineup that needs a jolt of energy, Semien could very well be an ideal candidate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>2. Oakland Athletics<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On November 1st, the Athletics opted to not give Semien the qualifying offer, a one-year $18.9 million contract. This does not eliminate the possibility of Semien returning, but it does seem to suggest that he might be outside of the Athletics price range. But, if Semien were to leave, then it would leave two gaping holes in the middle of the infield for the Athletics as <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lasteto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy La Stella<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">may be on the move, with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Chapman<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=olsonma02,olson-004mat&amp;search=Matt+Olson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Olson<\/a> <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the corners. Born in the Bay Area, Semien could still stay in Oakland on a one-year deal if his desired AAV is not available on the market. Although unlikely, he could also give Oakland a hometown discount and enter the free-agent market in 2022.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the lack of proven in-house options, including <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/machivi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vimael Machin<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/neusesh01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sheldon Neuse<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Athletics may be inclined to keep Semien on a one-year deal, as Simmons and Gregorius will be out of their price range.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>3. Texas Rangers<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the 2020 season, <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/andruel01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Elvis Andrus<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> batted .194 with three home runs in 29 games, producing a -0.4 WAR. This is just part of the downward trend for Andrus as he had\u00a0 a .684 OPS from 2018 and has looked a step slower defensively. 22-year old <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tejedan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anderson Tejeda<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a few flashes, batting .253 but with 30 strikeouts and two walks. Another option at shortstop for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/texas-rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">Texas Rangers<\/a> could be to move <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kineris01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Isiah Kiner-Falefa<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to shortstop and call-up top prospect<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=jung--000jos&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Jung<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even with these options, the Rangers can solidify their infield by signing Semien. A career .254 hitter, he would be a boost to a team that batted .217 in the abbreviated 2020 season. It could also spur a switch for Andrus to second base, hiding his defensive struggles with -7 defensive runs saved since 2019. With Kiner-Falefa\u2019s defensive versatility and the inexperience of Tejeda and Jung, Texas makes a strong candidate to sign Semien to a multi-year contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>4. St. Louis Cardinals<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/st-louis-cardinals\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> finished <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teamrankings.com\/mlb\/stat\/runs-per-game\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">24th in the majors<\/a> in runs per game, averaging just 4.20 runs per game last season. The offense was the kryptonite in the 2019 NLCS against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/washington-nationals\/\" target=\"_self\">Washington Nationals<\/a>, as they scored six runs in a four-game sweep. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the Francisco Lindor <a href=\"https:\/\/www.radio.com\/sports\/mlb\/phillies-cardinals-believed-to-be-in-mix-for-lindor-report\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">trade rumors<\/a> last week<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Cardinals seem to see the shortstop position as an area for potential improvement.<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dejonpa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Paul DeJong<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a solid player, batting .251 in his four-year Cardinals career, but he could move to second base to take over for<\/span><b> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wongko01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kolten Wong<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and compete with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/edmanto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy Edman<\/a><\/strong>. Semien improves the ceiling for the Cardinals\u2019 offense if he can come even close to his 2019 numbers.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the primary limitation for the Cardinals is their payroll. Having already declined Wong\u2019s $12.5 million club option, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Cardinals are expected to cut their payroll this season<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The only option for the Cardinals may be to increase the length of their contract, sacrificing the AAV.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/STLCards?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#STLCards<\/a> executive John Mozeliak said the team&#39;s payroll will come down in 2021. The Kolten Wong move was the first domino of that. &quot;Obviously, the success of the Cardinals the last 20 years has been our gate revenue. Toronto Blue Jays<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite a talented young infield, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/toronto-blue-jays\/\" target=\"_self\">Toronto Blue Jays <\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have kept infielders, such as <b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemahdj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DJ LeMahieu<\/a><\/b>, on their <a href=\"https:\/\/tipofthetower.com\/2020\/11\/20\/blue-jays-rumors-dj-lemahieu-teams-free-agency\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">radar this offseason<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bichebo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bo Bichette<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> most likely locked into the shortstop position, Semien would have to slot in at second or third base as <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/biggica01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cavan Biggio<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would have the other infield spot along with <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/guerrvl02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vladimir Guerrero Jr.<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> In his tenure with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/chicago-white-sox\/\" target=\"_self\">Chicago White Sox<\/a>, Semien had 13 errors in 50 games at third base. He was better at second base, with four errors in 29 games. However, Semien has grown into an above-average defender with the Athletics, so it seems plausible that he can seamlessly fit in with Toronto.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Blue Jays may only want to add an infielder if it is a superstar, like Lindor, or a massive upgrade like LeMahieu<\/span><b><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But, Semien could be that massive upgrade in his 2019 form. Semien would provide an upgrade over <\/span><b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/shawtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis Shaw<\/a><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, while providing a similar veteran presence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Last Word on Marcus Semien<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcus Semien is the biggest \u201cwhat if\u201d in this year\u2019s free agency class. If he returns to his 2019 performance, the list above would double, if not triple, because of his solid defense and excellent offensive output. With his 2020 season, questions arise as to whether that 2019 season was an outlier. Due to this, it is likely that Semien takes a smaller deal this offseason.
