In 849 innings, Stroman has struck out just 696 batters. Originally drafted in 2009 by the Washington Nationals, Stroman opted to attend Duke University. The Toronto Blue Jays selected Stroman with the 22nd overall pick in 2012 and was once thought of as their future ace.

After making his Major League debut in 2014 Stroman has yet to string back to back successful seasons. In 2019 Stroman was in the midst of a very good season when he was traded to the Mets at the trading deadline for Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson who were New York’s best pitching prospects.

Welcome Back to New York

Marcus Stroman is a local boy who was born in Medford New York but reportedly he desired to play for the New York Yankees. Stroman went 4-2 with a 3.77 ERA in 11 starts with the Mets in 2019. All reports indicated to Stroman turning down the Mets qualifying offer and becoming a free agent. In turn, the Mets would receive draft pick compensation.

So what happened to change Stroman’s mind about leaving the Mets. Stroman was reportedly “energized” by the introductory press conference new Mets owner Steve Cohen had on Monday. Cohen’s press conference has done more than just rejuvenating the fan base. It has also sparked the Mets current players and free agents.

Stroman’s return means the Mets now have three spots in their starting rotation locked up for 2021. Jacob deGrom is the ace of the staff and the best pitcher in the sport. David Peterson can now settle into the back end of the rotation with Stroman coming back. Stroman was one piece the Mets might have not expected back for 2021 but with all of the questions surrounding the rotation, he will be welcomed.

Main Image
Embed from Getty Images

Marcus Stroman accepted the New York Mets qualifying offer of 18.9 million dollars to return to Queens for the 2021 season.
