There is a chance that the Astros will resign Springer or Brantley, but there is a chance none of them return. If that&#8217;s the case, then all three will have quite a few suitors offering them all sorts of contracts this offseason. One of those teams who should inquire about Brantley is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/toronto-blue-jays\/\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Toronto Blue Jays<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brantley Would Help the Young Blue Jays<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">At 33-years old, he&#8217;s an above-average outfielder who is coming off a two-year, $32 million dollar contract with the Astros. In those two seasons, the Bellevue, WA native&#8217;s slash line was .309\/.370\/.497, while hitting 27 home runs for 112 RBI. His career contact rate is 90.9%, while his strikeout rate is 10.8%. They did so by being aggressive on the open market, landing Cy Young caliber pitcher <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ryuhy01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Hyun Jin Ryu<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>.<\/strong> The southpaw was a big reason why Toronto qualified for\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2020\/10\/08\/toronto-blue-jays-2020-season-in-review\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">the last spot in the expanded playoffs<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. The Blue Jays are a young team capable of improvement, and adding Brantley would be beneficial for a few good reasons.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Brantley&#8217;s Connection With the Club <\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">The outfielder was a member of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/cleveland-indians\/\" target=\"_self\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Cleveland Indians<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0simultaneously when Ross Atkins and Mark Shapiro were. Plus, adding an above-average outfielder like Brantley comes with a little versatility. The four-time All-Star has played all three outfield positions while filling in as the Astros DH 26 times during the 2020 season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">If the Blue Jays were to sign the former MVP finalist, the club could similarly use him. Toronto would cycle him and other batters in the DH spot while getting reps in the outfield. However, adding Brantley would force a lineup shuffle as the Blue Jays have <\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gurrilo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Lourdes Gurriel Jr.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grichra01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Randal Grichuk<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>,<\/strong> and<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernate01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<strong>Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0as their three everyday outfielders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Toronto&#8217;s most significant challenge for the outfield is at centerfield. Grichuk&#8217;s near $30 million dollar contract over three years is the only thing stopping them from signing another outfielder. The Blue Jays could spare Grichuk. He&#8217;s a good source of power at the plate, but he comes with subpar defense in centerfield. The Blue Jays should try to balance themselves out. Pitching is a priority, but improving a defense who ranked<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.fangraphs.com\/leaders.aspx?pos=all&amp;stats=fld&amp;lg=all&amp;qual=0&amp;type=1&amp;season=2020&amp;month=0&amp;season1=2020&amp;ind=0&amp;team=0,ts&amp;rost=0&amp;age=0&amp;filter=&amp;players=0&amp;startdate=2020-01-01&amp;enddate=2020-12-31&amp;sort=11,d\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a029th in defensive runs scored<\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/leaderboard\/outs_above_average?type=Fielding_Team&amp;year=2020&amp;team=&amp;range=year&amp;min=q&amp;pos=&amp;roles=&amp;viz=show\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0outs above average<\/span><\/a> is a must<span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">. Aside from the 31-year old Springer, the free-agent market at centerfield provides value from the likes of\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ozunama01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Marcell Ozuna<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pederjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Joc Pederson<\/strong><\/span><\/a><strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Now, if the Blue Jays can&#8217;t sign Brantley or any of the names above, or trade Grichuk, then\u00a0<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davisjo05.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>Jonathan Davis<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0is in play as the fourth outfield option. Davis, who has superior defensive skills over<\/span><a class=\"editor-rtfLink\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fishede01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0<strong>Derek Fisher<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\"><strong>,<\/strong> needs to improve his bat.
