And now we\u2019re heading into the World Series after a 16-team playoff run many weeks later. The Padres&#8217; 2020 season went so fast that it\u2019s hard to reflect on all the good parts.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But if you\u2019re a fan of the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/san-diego-padres\/\" target=\"_self\">San Diego Padres<\/a>, chances are you\u2019ll remember this year better than most. Let\u2019s recap the one of the best baseball seasons in San Diego history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Padres Hit the Ground Running<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think back to Opening Day on July 25th. Fans (from a distance) smelled chances for a playoff berth for the first time since 2006. The Padres took the field in an empty Petco Park with hearts full of hope for a 60-game season to go their way. Black Lives Matter t-shirts and masks among players reminded us just how unusual the 2020 season would be. But nonetheless, Opening Day raged with possibility for the Padres.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego started with two wins over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/arizona-diamondbacks\/\" target=\"_self\">Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a>. They became one of the only three teams to win their first two games of the season. It was here where fans saw <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/machama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Manny Machado<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s first home run of the season,\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/paddach01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Paddack<\/a><\/strong>\u2019s first shutout start of the year, and tremendous plate discipline throughout the lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The biggest trademark for the Padres this year has to be rallying to win. The Padres had 23 come-from-behind wins this season, the most in the league. The first was back on July 31, when <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatisfe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fernando Tatis<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Padres\/status\/1289407634823458817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1289407634823458817%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3%2Ccontainerclick_0&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fslackiebrown.com%2Fevery-fernando-tatis-jr-home-run-this-season%2F\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hit a two-out bomb<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the top of the ninth to tie it up 5-5 against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/colorado-rockies\/\" target=\"_self\">Colorado Rockies<\/a>. San Diego would go on to win 8-7, becoming the first team in the MLB with six wins atop the National League (NL) West standings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">If <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tatis_jr?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@tatis_jr<\/a> isn&#8217;t your favorite player&#8230; why the heck not?<a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/FriarFaithful?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#FriarFaithful<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/6pXMXrfpRT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/6pXMXrfpRT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 San Diego Padres (@Padres) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Padres\/status\/1289407634823458817?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 1, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Enter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/croneja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Cronenworth<\/a><\/strong>, now a candidate for the NL Rookie of the Year. His two triples and a double, plus his impressive defensive plays,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0in the first game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/los-angeles-dodgers\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> on August 3rd solidified his position in the starting lineup. Fun fact: Cronenworth played every position in the infield aside from pitcher and catcher this season. Anyways, the Padres would go on to beat L.A. 5-4\u2013with a little help from <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=,myerswi01&amp;search=Wil+Myers&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wil Myers<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grishtr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trent Grisham<\/a><\/strong> and Tatis, who each crushed solo home runs. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Welcome to Slam Diego<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast forward a few wins and a split-series with the Dodgers later. We&#8217;ve reached the part of the season where you may have had to pinch yourself because it seemed too good to be true. The Slam Diego Padres were born, and along with it, the beginning of a new kind of baseball.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s start from the beginning. On Aug. 17, Tatis <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jared_carrabis\/status\/1295567042939170825?s=10\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">launched a 3-0 pitch<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> low and away into right field to give the Padres a 14-3 lead over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/texas-rangers\/\" target=\"_self\">Texas Rangers<\/a>. This of course stirred up tons of drama. Many argued that Tatis disrespected the unspoken rules of baseball. Others claimed that this grand slam, and his overall energy as a player, brought the flash and fun that the game so desperately needed. Either way, his swing made history.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">FERNANDO TATIS JR. IS THE FACE OF BASEBALL <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/QLEMp0hXOT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/QLEMp0hXOT<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=carr--001jar&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jared Carr<\/a>abis (@Jared_Carrabis) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Jared_Carrabis\/status\/1295567042939170825?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 18, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The next game, Myers opened the top of the 1st with a grand slam against the Rangers. San Diego would go on to win this one 6-4. Queue another comeback, grand slam win the following night \u2013 this time from Machado. Down 3-2 with the bases full in the bottom of the 10th, he blasted a walk-off bomb to deep left field. Keep the ball rolling.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Aug. 20, the Padres became the first team in MLB history to hit grand slams in four consecutive games. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hosmeer01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eric Hosmer<\/a> <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sandiegouniontribune.com\/sports\/padres\/story\/2020-08-21\/padres-eric-hosmer-grand-slam-groundball-rate\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smoked one<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the right corner bleachers in the 5th inning, and Cronenworth hit a game-winning single in the bottom of the 10th to sweep the Rangers. This wild, crazy and historic night for San Diego marked the mid-way point in the season. More importantly, it showed the world that their lineup was a force to be reckoned with.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Move over, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=bautijo02,bautijo01&amp;search=Jose+Bautista&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Bautista<\/a>. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/RSRV6PEZFc\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/RSRV6PEZFc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 MLB (@MLB) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLB\/status\/1311861324658475016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">October 2, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Padres Push for Change<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One of the bigger moments to be proud of this team didn\u2019t have anything to do with baseball but more to do with fighting for racial injustice. On Aug. 26, the Padres <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2020\/08\/26\/san-diego-padres-postpone-play-due-to-jacob-blake-shooting\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">postponed their game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/seattle-mariners\/\" target=\"_self\">Seattle Mariners<\/a> in response to the shooting of Jacob Blake. This team, along with many others across all sports, demanded change within the police system and justice for Black lives.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Every Rose has its Thorn<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s great to remember these moments of glory, because this team\u2019s efforts this season were quite glorious. But the Padres had their fair share of blunders this season, and boy they weren\u2019t pretty.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their bullpen&#8217;s blown 6-0 lead over the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/san-francisco-giants\/\" target=\"_self\">San Francisco Giants<\/a> on July 29 \u2013 which resulted in a loss off a walk-off home run \u2013 showed the first signs of concern. Their former All-Star <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yateski01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kirby Yates<\/a><\/strong> was supposed to be a strength to their relief corps. Instead, he was a must-replace-immediately kind of closer. Luckily, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pomerdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Drew Pomeranz<\/a><\/strong> filled in. Other weak links in their pen needed fixing. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strahma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Strahm<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stammcr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Craig Stammen<\/a><\/strong>, who both allowed crucial go-ahead runs in multiple outings. General manager A.J. Preller <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2020\/09\/02\/padres-trade-deadline-friars-fix-whats-broken\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">did just that<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the trade deadline, especially with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clevimi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Clevinger<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosentr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Rosenthal<\/a><\/strong>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second half of the 60-game sprint brought <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/video\/jurickson-profar-on-walk-off-hit\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more walk-off wins<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/padres-grand-slam-surge-continues\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">another grand slam <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and dominant pitching. Starter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lametdi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dinelson Lamet<\/a><\/strong> flirted with several no-hitters this season, and earned the number one spot in the pitching rotation until an elbow injury ended his season. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davieza02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach Davies<\/strong><\/a>\u2019 changeup was deadly all year, and he finished with an impressive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davieza02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2.73 ERA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Clevinger and Paddack added not only solid starts but also put the Padres in contention with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.thelonghairs.us\/long-hair-major-league-baseball-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best long hair <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of 2020.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Legends Are Born in the Postseason<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, the best of San Diego\u2019s play this year came in the postseason. For the first time in 14 years, the Padres earned a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2020\/09\/29\/slam-diego-is-playoff-bound\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trip to the playoffs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Their Wild Card Series against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/st-louis-cardinals\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> was also a come-from-behind battle. Without their two aces, Clevinger and Lamet, they used 26 pitchers to cover 27 innings. And again, they did it in style.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Facing elimination in Game Two of the series, Tatis lifted a three-run bomb into left field to bring the Padres within one. Machado tied it up 6-6 with a home run of his own. The next inning, Tatis smashed another one with a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MLB\/status\/1311861324658475016?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1311861324658475016%7Ctwgr%5Eshare_3%2Ccontainerclick_1&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.mlb.com%2Fnews%2Ffernando-tatis-jr-homers-twice-adds-epic-bat-flip\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bat-flip<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> on top. The Friars went on to force a Game Three, which they won handily 4-0. Even though the Padres were swept by the only team in the NL with a better record, they fought hard until the end. The Dodgers won with better pitching and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/cody-bellinger-robs-fernando-tatis-jr-of-home-run\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stellar defense<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but the Padres proved they could finally hang with the top dogs in the NL West.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though the year of 2020 didn\u2019t end with a World Series title, this team fired up a city who hadn\u2019t experienced moments like this in over a decade. They brought fun back to baseball, on the field and off. This team was a joy to watch, and the 2021 season can\u2019t come soon enough.
