{"id":39555,"date":"2020-10-13T01:00:49","date_gmt":"2020-10-13T05:00:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=39555"},"modified":"2020-10-13T18:29:19","modified_gmt":"2020-10-13T22:29:19","slug":"braves-dodgers-20201012-nlcs1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2020\/10\/13\/braves-dodgers-20201012-nlcs1\/","title":{"rendered":"Braves Bats Come Alive in Ninth to Beat Dodgers"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2><strong>Braves 5, Dodgers 1<br \/>\nNLCS Game One<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/atlanta-braves\/\" target=\"_self\">Atlanta Braves<\/a> scored four runs in the top of the ninth off <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/treinbl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Blake Treinen<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgeeja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake McGee<\/a><\/strong>, breaking a 1-1 tie. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/melanma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Melancon<\/a><\/strong> then pitched a scoreless bottom of the ninth to seal the deal as the Braves beat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/los-angeles-dodgers\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a>, 5-1, in Game One of the NLCS Monday night.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Braves Take Early Lead, Dodgers Keep It Close<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>The pitching matchup \u2013 <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/buehlwa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Walker Buehler<\/a><\/strong> for the Dodgers and lefty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/friedma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Fried<\/a><\/strong> for the Braves \u2013 looked great on paper, and it did not disappoint the 10,700 in attendance at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas. Although Braves first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/freemfr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freddie Freeman<\/a><\/strong> hit a solo homer in the top of the first, it was the only run and only hit Buehler allowed in the first five innings. Buehler scattered five walks across those innings, striking out seven as he left every runner stranded.<\/p>\n<p>Fried was also terrific, blanking the Dodgers in the first four innings. He allowed a single and a walk in each of the first two but escaped unscathed each time. In the first, third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turneju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Turner<\/a><\/strong> punched a two-out single to center and reached second when first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/muncyma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Muncy<\/a><\/strong> followed with a walk. Catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=smithwi05,smithwi04,smith-082wil,smith-084wil&amp;search=Will+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Smith<\/a><\/strong>, up next, could not capitalize, striking out to end the inning.<\/p>\n<p>In the second, the Braves had to alter their game plan when left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duvalad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Duvall<\/a><\/strong> injured an oblique muscle while fouling off a 1-1 sinker. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pachecr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cristian Pache<\/a><\/strong> took over and walked, his first of two in the game. As mentioned earlier, he did not score, as Buehler struck out the next two hitters. In the bottom of the inning, a one-out single by center fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/polloaj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">AJ Pollock<\/a><\/strong> and two-out walk by left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tayloch03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Taylor<\/a><\/strong> put runners on first and second for right fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bettsmo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mookie Betts<\/a><\/strong>. Fried escaped when Betts flied to center for the third out.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Dodgers Tie It Up, Braves Immediately Threaten<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Fried pitched a perfect third and fourth. Buehler walked one in the third and two in the fourth. Then, in the bottom of the fifth, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernaen02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kik\u00e9 Hernandez<\/a><\/strong> tied the game with a loud leadoff homer to left. Shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/seageco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Seager<\/a><\/strong> later singled with two out, but it went for naught when Turner, up next, grounded into a 6-4 force play.<\/p>\n<p>Buehler ran out of gas in the sixth. Back-to-back singles by catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/darnatr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis d\u2019Arnaud<\/a><\/strong> and second baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/albieoz01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ozzie Albies<\/a><\/strong> started the frame, so Dodgers manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=roberda07,roberda06,roberda05,roberda03&amp;search=Dave+Roberts&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dave Roberts<\/a><\/strong> replaced Buehler with young fireballer <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gratebr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brusdar Graterol<\/a><\/strong>. It took him six pitches to end the threat. Shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/swansda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dansby Swanson<\/a><\/strong>, the first to face him, popped the first pitch up to the second baseman. Pache came up next and fanned on three pitches, bringing up right fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/markani01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Markakis<\/a><\/strong>, who grounded the second pitch back to the mound, retiring the side.<\/p>\n<p>Fried pitched a 1-2-3 sixth before giving way to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=martich02,martin017chr,martin015chr,martin012chr&amp;search=Chris+Martin&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Martin<\/a><\/strong> in the seventh. He combined with Will Smith and Mark Melancon, who pitched the eighth and ninth, respectively, to pitch a perfect final three innings.<\/p>\n<p>The other Dodgers relievers had a more difficult time. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/maydu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dustin May<\/a><\/strong> pitched a scoreless seventh. Although he combined with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=gonzavi02,gonzal008vic&amp;search=Victor+Gonzalez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Gonzalez<\/a><\/strong> to pitch a scoreless eighth, the Braves had loaded the bases before coming up fruitless.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Ninth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>It all fell apart for the Dodgers \u2013 and came together for the Braves \u2013 in the ninth. Blake Treinen pitched to the first four batters and didn\u2019t miss any bats. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rileyau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Riley<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 who moved from third base to left field in the bottom of the eighth \u2013 led off the ninth with a no-doubt homer off the fa\u00e7ade of the second deck in left-center. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/acunaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ronald Acu\u00f1a, Jr.<\/a><\/strong> followed with a double and reached third when Freeman flied to the track in center, missing a home run by mere feet. Designated hitter <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ozunama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcell Ozuna<\/a><\/strong> plated Acu\u00f1a with a single to right, chasing Treinen from the game.<\/p>\n<p>Jake McGee took the hill to stop the bleeding. He succeeded, as d\u2019Arnaud popped to short for the second out. That is, McGee succeeded <strong>at first<\/strong>, since Albies followed with a drive to left-center that landed near Riley\u2019s blast, providing the final margin for the 5-1 Braves victory.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Outlook<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Buehler expressed disappointment in his walk total. \u201cWhen you walk four or five guys like I have the past couple of outings, that\u2019s not good for anyone. That hasn\u2019t bit us, but I want to be better, and that\u2019s the glaring weakness in what I\u2019ve been doing right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Smith earned the win in relief, while Treinen took the loss. Game Two will pit Braves rookie <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderia01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Anderson<\/a><\/strong> (3-2, 1.95 ERA, 41 K; Postseason 2-0, 0.00 ERA, 17 K) against righty <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonsoto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Gonsolin<\/a><\/strong> (2-2, 2.31 ERA, 46 K), who is making the first postseason start of his career. He is doing so on an emergency basis to fill in for the injured <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kershcl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Clayton Kershaw<\/a><\/strong>.
