Cincinnati is buzzing with more optimism than seven years ago. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vottojo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joey Votto<\/a>, the only remaining member of the 2013 postseason team, perhaps said it best in a post-game interview after clinching a berth: \u201cWe\u2019re <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a (expletive) nightmare<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Indeed they are such a nightmare that no other team would want to play them. After a season in which they struggled early, by September things did not look promising. But all Cincinnati needed was one good week to be in the postseason conversation &#8212; and in the last two weeks of the 2020 campaign they went 11-3 to clinch the seven seed. Their reward is playing the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/atlanta-braves\/\" target=\"_self\">Atlanta Braves<\/a>, champions of the NL East. It is an interesting matchup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Rotation<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A strong and deep rotation is the biggest reason for Cincinnati\u2019s recent success. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Bauer<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=castilu02,castilu01,castil015lui,castil020lui,castil019lui,castil014lui&amp;search=Luis+Castillo&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Castillo<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Sonny Gray<\/a> could easily be aces on any other team and during a playoff series, especially in a short series. Bauer is most likely going to win the National League Cy Young award and Castillo\u2019s success against Atlanta in the past is a good reason for Braves fans to fear the Reds. With how dominant Gray has been this season, he is the right guy for a series clincher if it goes three games. Furthermore, Gray has pitched well against Atlanta in his career. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mahlety01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Mahle<\/a> has also performed well of late and could be an excellent option if the team goes deeper into the playoffs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Starting pitching poses some questions for the Braves. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/friedma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Fried<\/a> has been their best pitcher all season, but he has dealt with an injury. How will he do in the postseason after coming off an injury? <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderia01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Anderson<\/a> has also been very good for Atlanta, but he is a rookie and how he responds to playoff pressure will be key.\u00a0 Moreover, although Fried is back from an injury, Braves hurlers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sorokmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Soroka<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hamelco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cole Hamels<\/a> are out for the season. There really isn\u2019t another reliable starter after Fried and Anderson, so the hope is that either <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wrighky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Wright<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tomlijo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Tomlin<\/a> will step up.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cincinnati has the edge in starting pitching.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Bullpen<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Reds bullpen was horrendous until midseason. But once the team shed the unreliable arms, the relief corps got into a groove and became more and more dependable. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesra01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raisel Iglesias<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lorenmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Lorenzen<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/simslu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lucas Sims<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garream01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Amir Garrett<\/a> have been excellent down the stretch. However, it was the acquisition of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bradlar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Archie Bradley<\/a> that seemed to cement the bullpen. Even <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/antonte01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tejay Antone<\/a> has pitched well, but he might be used differently if Cincinnati goes deeper into the playoffs. The bullpen will even get <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mileywa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Wade Miley<\/a>, who can be used as long relief.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Braves bullpen has been excellent all season long and may well be their biggest strength. In a short series, that strong pen could redound to Atlanta\u2019s benefit. If it goes to a third contest, it could become a bullpen game. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/melanma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Melancon<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/minteaj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">A.J. Minter<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matzety01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Matzek<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/odayda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Darren O\u2019Day<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=martich02,martin017chr,martin015chr,martin012chr&amp;search=Chris+Martin&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Martin<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greensh02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shane Greene<\/a> have all been dominant &#8212; and there is also a lot of experience. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=smithwi05,smithwi04,smith-082wil,smith-084wil&amp;search=Will+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Will Smith<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/daytogr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grant Dayton<\/a> as options, there are many reliable arms for the Braves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta holds the edge here, but the Reds might be able to go toe-to-toe with them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Offense<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cincinnati had a strong lineup on paper coming into 2020, but offense was the most frustrating part of the club. There was a stretch where it seemed they couldn\u2019t score, and when they did, it was usually one or two runs. But in the final two weeks the lineup suddenly began to live up to its potential. Even if it is not as imposing as once believed, the Cincinnati offense should not be dismissed. Reds bats could easily put up a lot of runs, or, in a close game, change the complexity with one swing of the bat. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/winkeje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jesse Winker<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moustmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mike Moustakas<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/casteni01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nicholas Castellanos<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suareeu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Eugenio Suarez<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goodwbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brian Goodwin<\/a> make for a tough lineup. Votto has also been hot of late despite a down year. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/galvifr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freddy Galvis<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/akiyash01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Shogo Akiyama<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/senzeni01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Senzel<\/a> have the ability to get on base and to go deep.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Braves, on the other hand, have a lot of thump in their lineup and are scary good. Atlanta\u2019s most productive hitters, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/freemfr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freddie Freeman<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ozunama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcell Ozuna<\/a>, have each looked like NL MVP candidates. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/acunaro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ronald Acuna Jr.<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rileyau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Riley<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/swansda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dansby Swanson<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/albieoz01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ozzie Albies<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/darnatr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Travis d\u2019Arnaud<\/a> each can slug the ball and are not easy outs. Their lineup has hit 103 home runs &#8212; a challenge for Cincinnati pitching.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atlanta\u2019s bats hold the edge, but that doesn\u2019t mean the Reds won\u2019t be able to match them. With Cincinnati\u2019s superior starting pitching, the Braves might have a hard time scoring runs, while the less-imposing Reds lineup could do well against Braves starters.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, does Cincinnati match up well against Atlanta? Absolutely, and they actually should be considered the favorites in this series. While the playoffs are a crapshoot, facing the Braves was a favorable matchup.
