For the first time in over a decade, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/san-diego-padres\/\" target=\"_self\">San Diego Padres<\/a> are playoff bound. They are the No. 4 seed and will host the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/st-louis-cardinals\/\" target=\"_self\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a> in their first Wild Card Series starting at 2pm PT on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Baseball\u2019s playoff format this year is quite confusing. From MLB\u2019s two leagues (National and American) 16 teams make up the postseason this year, up from the usual 10. The top two teams from each of the six divisions and the next two best teams in each league round out the World Series contenders. Unlike any other year however, all teams will face off in a best-of-three Wild Card Series, at the higher ranked team\u2019s stadium, to earn a spot in the best-of-five Division Series, which will happen <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sportingnews.com\/ca\/mlb\/news\/mlb-playoff-bubble-rules-locations-schedule\/1sbxmc3mc0nuv12x0ibvmjm7ie\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the bubble<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Follow?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All you need to know is that Petco Park will finally be filled with postseason action. Here are a couple reasons why Padres fans should be confident about this playoff run.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Hot Bats and Lights Out Pitching. . . All Season Long<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this year being one of the most unprecedented in sports history, the Padres brought the heat all shortened-season long. They finished with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/standings\/_\/sort\/winpercent\/dir\/desc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best winning percentage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in franchise history at .617. Their 37-23 record ranked second-best in the National League (NL). San Diego has proven why they deserved a playoff berth\u2013at the plate and on the mound.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Padres <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finished with a .796 OPS, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/stats\/team\/_\/table\/batting\/sort\/OPS\/dir\/desc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth highest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the majors. They <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/standings\/_\/sort\/pointdifferential\/dir\/desc\/group\/overall\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second highest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> run differential and finished the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/standings\/_\/sort\/pointsfor\/dir\/desc\/group\/overall\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">third highest<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in runs scored. San Diego has two NL MVP candidates swinging hot bats in their lineup with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/machama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Manny Machado<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatisfe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Fernando Tatis Jr.<\/strong><\/a>, who each rank among the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/leagues\/MLB\/2020-batting-leaders.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">top 10<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the league for home runs. And don\u2019t count out <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/myerswi01?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wil Myers<\/strong><\/a>, who hit 15 homers this year, making the Padres the only other team besides the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/mlb-teams\/los-angeles-dodgers\/\" target=\"_self\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> to have three players hit over 15 home runs this season.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego\u2019s pitching staff finally fell into place near the end of regular season play. Their 3.86 ERA <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/stats\/team\/_\/view\/pitching\/table\/pitching\/sort\/ERA\/dir\/asc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ranked eighth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and they finished <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/stats\/team\/_\/view\/pitching\/table\/pitching\/sort\/strikeouts\/dir\/desc\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fifth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for strikeouts. Relievers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pomerdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Drew Pomeranz<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosentr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trevor Rosenthal<\/strong><\/a> have come in clutch during tough innings to win close games all year. While the injury status for their ace starters <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lametdi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dinelson Lamet<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clevimi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Clevinger<\/strong><\/a> remain unknown, manager Jayce Tingler feels optimistic that both will be viable options heading into the Wild Card series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019ll know information each day,\u201d Tingler said in an interview with the San Diego Union Tribune. \u201cAll signs seem to be very encouraging.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Padres&#8217; Team Chemistry Wins Ballgames<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recall watching Padre games for the past 13 years. If San Diego went down a couple runs at any point in the game, the team hardly had any fire to bounce back. Pitching didn\u2019t improve and lineups stayed quiet. Morale seemed low and rally caps never came on.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This year, it\u2019s an entirely new story\u2013the story of the comeback.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Diego\u2019s 22 comeback victories\u2013the most in the league\u2013 prove just how relentless they can be. This Pads Squad is special. Granted, that was over 14 years ago. But considering this is the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/padres\/history\/postseason\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fourth time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in all six of the playoff appearances that Birds face the Pads, one may consider them postseason rivals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">St. Louis knows better than any team this year just how crucial every game and every inning can be. After their season came to a standstill because of a COVID-19 outbreak on their team, the Cardinals had to play 53 games in 44 days\u2013including 11 double headers\u2013in order to clinch a playoff spot. Injuries to starting pitchers and offensive struggles also plague the Cards. They\u2019ve treaded water all season long to get to this point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the main reason the Padres can win is because of the team chemistry they built game in and game out. Tatis Jr. said it best during the latest postgame celebration: <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe just have each other\u2019s back and we find a way to win games.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Padres are the favorites in this Wild Card Series, and rightfully so. They earned it. Their hot bats and rock solid pitching should edge out the Cards for the first round of playoffs.
