They needed a frontline starting pitcher, a stronger catcher, and consistent relief pitching to boost their chances of making a serious playoff run.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now it\u2019s September, and those three weak links were addressed in a matter of 72 hours. The Padres added starter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clevimi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Clevinger<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/n\/nolaau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Austin Nola<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosentr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trevor Rosenthal<\/strong><\/a> to their roster. Considering this team may be the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2020\/08\/24\/san-diego-padres-catch-fire-in-2020\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">most exciting team in baseball<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this crew could bring even more electricity to the Padres clubhouse. Unsure of who these guys even are? Read a bit about them and what they bring to sunny San Diego.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Mike Clevinger- Starting Pitcher, Signed Through 2022<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Clevinger is the starter the Padres have been vying for all these years. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s ranked sixth in the league and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/29778857\/sources-indians-trade-ace-mike-clevinger-padres\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">second<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> among American League starters since 2017 in ERA. With a rotation that struggled to find its rhythm in the past, Clevinger should be the clear ace moving forward.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only can he throw hard, but he can also rock serious flow. He&#8217;s nicknamed \u201cSunshine\u201d after Ronald Bass&#8217;s long-haired hippie look in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=rSYwufGXQCk\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i>Remember the Titans<\/i><\/a>. His luscious locks may even make <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/linceti01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tim Lincecum\u2019s<\/strong><\/a> haircut look weak. Sunshine also sports customized <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=tQuoSnjJW8Y\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jimi Hendrix cleats<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and colorful tattoos cover his arms. The MLB even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/mike-clevinger-paints-glove-after-color-issue-c245211554\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outlawed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> his bright aqua-colored glove last season because it was a distraction to the batters. This guy\u2019s got style, and he\u2019s not afraid to express himself.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf there\u2019s one thing I can bring to the field, it\u2019s a lot of energy,\u201d Clevinger said. \u201cAnd this team\u2019s got a bunch of it, so I have a good feeling I\u2019m gonna fit in.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/5vM76KpWh44\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Austin Nola- Starting Catcher, Signed Through 2025<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Austin Nola already made an impact on the Padres lineup as the starting backstop in the final game of the series against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/colorado-rockies\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Colorado Rockies<\/a> on Sunday, August 31st. He caught a 6-0 shutout to cap off the series win.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because the Padres had just faced Nola\u2019s former team, the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/seattle-mariners\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seattle Mariners<\/a>, last week he <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">said<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> knowing their pitches and pitcher\u2019s spots gave him an advantage during his debut. He also captured his first hit in a Friar&#8217;s uniform with a single to left field.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The offensive production from the catchers in San Diego has been rather slim. Nola\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/team\/stats\/_\/name\/sd\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.833 OPS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this season is almost 300 points higher than their previous catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hedgeau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Austin Hedges<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> It also ranks <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/padres\/stats\/all-time-totals?position=C\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in all-time totals in Padres history. Finally, a catcher who can hit.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nola\u2019s versatility and resilience also add to his character. He grew up with baseball at the center of his universe, going to countless Louisiana State University (LSU) games with his brother. After playing shortstop for LSU, he persevered through eight minor league seasons before finally earning a spot in the big leagues in 2019. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He played first, second and third base as well as both corners of the outfield for Seattle. Even though he\u2019ll get the majority of his starts as the primary catcher, San Diego could utilize him in more ways than just behind home plate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe energy here is phenomenal,\u201d Nola said in a post-game interview. \u201cWe\u2019ve got tons of talent. I\u2019m excited just to be a part of it and help us in any way.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QmGfPoPMFdg\" width=\"900\" height=\"506\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Trevor Rosenthal- Reliever, Signed Through 2020<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps the most relieving (no pun intended) move for the Padres during the trade deadline was acquiring Trevor Rosenthal from the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/kansas-city-royals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City Royals<\/a>. The Padres relief corp has barely skated through late innings all season long. With <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pomerdr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Drew Pomeranz<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yateski01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kirby Yates<\/strong><\/a> both out with injuries, their back-end pitchers are pushing their breaking points.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rosenthal\u2019s 3.29 ERA and his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/trevor-rosenthal-padres-deal\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">0.69 ERA<\/a> in four postseasons could fill this hole. He\u2019s got a wicked <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fastball<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and already made a strong debut in his ninth-inning debut against the Rockies on Sunday.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, Rosenthal\u2019s career hasn\u2019t always been so rosy. Last year, he pitched for the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/washington-nationals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Washington Nationals<\/a> and became the first pitcher in history that needed <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">five<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> appearances just to record a single out. He recorded a 13.50 ERA with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/detroit-tigers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Detroit Tigers<\/a> in the same year, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/29767477\/sources-padres-agree-acquire-trevor-rosenthal-trade-royals\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">going 0-1 in 22 appearances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is almost unrecognizable from his performance in 2013 with the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/st-louis-cardinals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a>\u00a0when he helped the Birds get to the World Series.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even though Rosenthal has had his fair share of ups and downs, he <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has 128 saves and a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosentr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3.45 ERA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over eight seasons in the Majors.
