He was drafted in the 17th round of the 2016 draft, and has been in the minors ever since. He’s a shortstop that just hasn’t quite found his swing at the plate. It seems Chicago was done waiting for him to develop.

Short is a bit undersized at 5’10, but he has shown an ability to hit for power on occasion. He probably won’t be a star by any means, but he will be one of the best infielders in the Tiger’s farm system. Detroit may end up getting more out of this trade in the long run, but it’s a reasonable deal for both organizations.

More Depth to Strong Outfield

Maybin is a veteran and should be a quality bat off the bench. The 33-year old has only played fourteen games this season. Chicago will be the ninth team that he has suited up for. He has a slash line of .244/.311/.415 in 2020. Overall, the Cubs may have added him for his defense and speed on the bases. They weren’t in desperate need of another outfielder, the move simply adds more depth. The acquisition comes right after the team made history by having all three outfielders hit multiple home runs in one game.

The @Cubs are the first team in @MLB history to have all 3 OF have multi-HR games. pic.twitter.com/G8C3qZe8Dj

— MLB Stats (@MLBStats) August 30, 2020

Clearly, they are loading up to make a deep playoff run.
