Padres Acquire Moreland from Red Sox<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The San Diego Padres<\/a> acquired first baseman Mitch Moreland<\/strong><\/a> from the Boston Red Sox<\/a> in exchange for a pair of prospects. The Padres sent 21-year old third baseman Hudson Potts<\/strong><\/a> and 20-year old outfielder Jeisson<\/strong> Rosario<\/a> to Boston. The deal to send Moreland out west has been in the works for a few days but sides agreed on Saturday night before announcing on Sunday.<\/p>\n

Other moves related to the deal included the Red Sox calling up the team’s No. 3 prospect Bobby Dalbec<\/strong><\/a> to replace Moreland. Correspondingly, they also released infielder Marco Hernandez<\/strong><\/a> to make room for Potts and Rosario.<\/p>\n

Mitch Moreland<\/strong><\/h2>\n

The first baseman was traded just one day after officially reaching 10 years of service time in the big leagues. In that time he’s hit for a combined .253 with the Red Sox and the Texas Rangers<\/a>. Moreland was a 2016 Gold Glove Award winner and a 2018 All-Star. Along with his personal accomplishments, he has also reached the World Series three different times; twice with the Rangers and winning it with the Red Sox in 2018.<\/p>\n

Moreland was a bright spot for the Red Sox in what has been a disastrous 2020 season to this point. He’s batting .328 while leading the team with eight home runs and 21 RBI. The departure makes sense for Boston who looks like they may be headed for a rebuild, and Moreland has been one of the few productive pieces on the team this year, along with the fact he was only signed to a one-year contract this offseason.<\/p>\n

Hudson Potts<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Potts was formerly the No. 16 prospect in the Padres system. The third baseman has a similar scouting report to Dalbec. Good hands defensively with more than enough power at the plate, but strikeouts will be an issue for the 20-year old. He has batted .256 with 57 homers in his minor league career to this point.<\/p>\n

Jeisson Rosario<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Rosario was the Padres No. 19 ranked prospect. While he doesn’t possess the power that Potts does, Rosario appears to have the speed and defensive capabilities to be an everyday big league center fielder one day. Since joining the Padres minor league system, Rosario is batting .264 with 37 stolen bases.<\/p>\n
