The Cardinals missed 18 games after 10 players and eight staff members tested positive for COVID-19. This hiatus marked the longest midseason break not caused by a strike in MLB history. St. Louis is 9-8 since their return with an 11-11 record overall.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What&#8217;s Good<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Though the Cardinals were down 10 team members for a few games, players are now returning from the COVID-19 list. All seven Cardinals who tested positive in Milwaukee have been cleared to return to play. The other three players expect to be cleared soon. Veteran catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/molinya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Yadier Molina<\/strong><\/a> returned to the roster on Thursday, August 20. Molina has\u00a0 12 hits and seven RBI since returning to the Cardinals lineup. 2019 All-Star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dejonpa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Paul DeJong<\/strong><\/a> also returned to play last weekend. Pitchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=martica04,martica03,martica02,martin019car&amp;search=Carlos+Martinez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carlos Martinez<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/helslry01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Ryan Helsley<\/strong><\/a> are reportedly near a return to the roster.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the Cardinals are happy to welcome back their returning players, the last couple weeks offered unexpected opportunities for new players. Eleven Cardinals have made their major league debuts since the team returned to play. Highly anticipated prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=carlsdy01,carlso001dyl&amp;search=Dylan+Carlson&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dylan Carlson<\/strong><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2020\/08\/17\/dylan-carlsons-major-league-debut\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">debuted on August 15<\/a>. Carlson has 11 hits, including three doubles and a home run. Several pitchers debuted over the last two weeks, including\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/elledse01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Seth Elledge<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oviedjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Johan Oviedo<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=sanchri01,sanche007ric&amp;search=Ricardo+Sanchez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ricardo Sanchez<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crismna01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nabil Crismatt<\/strong><\/a>. New addition <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/millebr02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brad Miller<\/strong><\/a> has also been able to see more at-bats recently. He is currently slashing .318\/.446\/.568. 25-year-old catcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kniznan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Andrew Knizner<\/strong><\/a> played in six games while Molina was out.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals pitching boasts the lowest batting average against in all of baseball right now. The Cardinals are also third in on-base-percentage. Third baseman and designated hitter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=carpema01,carpen003mat&amp;search=Matt+Carpenter&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Matt Carpenter<\/strong><\/a> is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pantagraph.com\/sports\/hochman-can-the-cardinals-and-carpenter-s-nothing-to-lose-attitude-actually-help-the-team\/article_725c20d8-af97-594c-8354-16716fd7c195.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">optimistic about the season<\/a>, saying, \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019re basically playing like we have nothing to lose, because we really don\u2019t. I mean, not a lot of people expect a lot out of us, given the circumstances and what we\u2019ve been through. So nobody\u2019s expecting anything out of us, and sometimes that\u2019s a good place to be in mentally.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s Bad<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of the Cardinals&#8217; debuts have been successful or, at the very least, unremarkable. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of reliever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ramirro02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Roel Ramirez<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> Ramirez gave up four consecutive home runs to the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/chicago-white-sox\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chicago White Sox<\/a> in his debut on August 16. Apart from this appearance, St. Louis has also struggled with pitching depth. <\/span>The Cardinals have limited their starters&#8217; pitch counts since their return to baseball. The starting pitchers will need to pitch more innings as the season continues.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s Next<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals have a grueling schedule for the remainder of the season. They are slated to play 36 games over the next 31 days. St. Louis will have just two off days in September. If playoff spots and seeds have not been determined by their last game, the Cardinals could play deciding games at the end of September. St. Louis can contribute much of their successful return to baseball to their young talent.
