The Padres released the following statement after players and coaches cleared Petco Park\u2019s infield.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"und\"><a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/oCYHHdVKqC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/oCYHHdVKqC<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 San Diego Padres (@Padres) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Padres\/status\/1298779893963124736?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">August 27, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;We understand the Mariners decision to postpone tonight\u2019s game and we support the players\u2019 efforts to use their platform to bring awareness to the very serious issue of racial injustice impacting our country today.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Last Monday, the Padres <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2020\/08\/20\/sports\/baseball\/fernando-tatis-grand-slam-unwritten-rules.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experienced backlash<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because their young star <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tatisfe02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fernando Tatis Jr.<\/a> swung on a 3-0 pitch and hit a grand slam. A week later, baseball in San Diego paused in protest.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The decision to boycott the game was part of a chain reaction that started with the National Basketball Association. Early this afternoon, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wisn.com\/article\/milwaukee-bucks-boycott-playoff-game\/33810098\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Milwaukee Bucks boycotted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> their scheduled playoff game, causing a ripple effect across sports. Six Women&#8217;s National Basketball Association teams <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/news\/513868-wnba-joins-nba-in-postponing-games-after-jason-blake-shooting\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">staged a walkout<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of their own. Four other NBA teams postponed their playoff games. Five games in Major League Soccer were called off. Teams across MLB refused to play, including the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/milwaukee-brewers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Milwaukee Brewers<\/a>, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/cincinnati-reds\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cincinnati Reds<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/los-angeles-dodgers\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Los Angeles Dodgers<\/a> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/san-francisco-giants\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">San Francisco Giants<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sports Decide Enough Is Enough<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today the world of sports decided it\u2019s time to demand justice. And on a day in history as important as this one.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Aug. 26, 2016, our nation witnessed Colin Kaepernick protest racial injustices by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bleacherreport.com\/articles\/2660085-colin-kaepernick-sits-during-national-anthem-before-packers-vs-49ers\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sitting during the national anthem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He later made a bigger statement by kneeling, and leagues chose not to take a stand back then.
