Coming off of the second-worst season in team history, the team currently sits fourth in the American League’s Central Division with a 10-14 record. Detroit is likely going to miss the playoffs for the sixth straight year. However, there is one somewhat silver lining. The man who has been one of the faces of the franchise for 10 years now, Miguel Cabrera, is just a handful of hits away from a major milestone.

Whom Cabrera is Passing

Following a hit against the Cleveland Indians on Friday, Cabrera is now just eight hits away from tying a fellow Tiger for 50th on the all-time hits list, according to Baseball-Reference. Charlie Gehringer retired following the 1942 season with 2,839 hits. At the time, he was 18th all-time in hits. Since then, he has been passed a few times, sliding down to 50th. Gehringer was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1949, was a six-time all-star, and was the 1937 American League MVP.

When Miguel Cabrera Hits the Milestone

So far this season, Cabrera is averaging two hits every three games. If he keeps that pace up, we should see the designated hitter tie for the spot in twelve games. This would be the September 4th game in Minnesota against the division-leading Twins.

Cabrera is also on the cusp of moving up in the home run books, as well. He is just twelve home runs away from moving up into a tie for 28th all-time. That chase is a little less likely to happen this season, as Cabrera is only averaging one home run for every four appearances, meaning “Miggy” likely needs roughly 48 more games to hit that milestone.

Miguel Cabrera has called Detroit home for over a decade at this point. During this time, he has gone through some of the biggest ups-and-downs possible. He played in a World Series in 2012. He was also on the team that lost nearly 71% of their games in 2019. But Cabrera has always been there and now, has a chance to further cement his legacy by moving into the top 50 all-time for hits.

Main Image
Embed from Getty Images

The 2020 season has not been a great year for the Detroit Tigers.
