{"id":36836,"date":"2020-08-17T11:57:43","date_gmt":"2020-08-17T15:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/?p=36836"},"modified":"2020-08-17T11:58:02","modified_gmt":"2020-08-17T15:58:02","slug":"andy-young-moment-arizona-diamondbacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2020\/08\/17\/andy-young-moment-arizona-diamondbacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Andy Young Enjoying His Moment"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/ARI\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Arizona Diamondbacks<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> player <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngan02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Andy Young<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">\u2019s ride to the Big Leagues has had some hurdles but he has found a home and sense of appreciation during his time with the Diamondbacks organization.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">St Louis Cardinals Organization<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Young signed with the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/STL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">St Louis Cardinals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> organization in 2016. He made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast League Cardinals before receiving a promotion to the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League. In 53 games between the two clubs, he hit three homeruns with 24 RBI while batting .271.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He began 2017 with the Peoria Chiefs and was named to the Midwest League All-Star Game. After batting .284 with 12 home runs and 38 RBI in 58 games with Peoria, he was promoted to the Palm Beach Cardinals. In 57 games for Palm Beach, he hit .265 with five home runs and twenty RBI.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The 2018 season started with Young at Palm Beach followed with a promotion to AA Springfield in July. In 119 games between the two clubs, he slashed .289 with 21 home runs and 58 RBI. After the 2018 season, he played for the Surprise Saguaros of the Arizona Fall League.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Traded to Arizona in 2018<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">In December 2018 the Diamondbacks sent <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goldspa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Paul Goldschmidt<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> to the Cardinals. In return they received pitcher <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?search=Luke+Weaver+\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Luke Weaver<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, catcher <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kellyca02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Carson Kelly<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and Young. While splitting his season between AA Jackson and AAA Reno, Young set career-high marks in home runs (29) and RBI (81) during his first year in the Diamondbacks system.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Not Considered a Top Prospect<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">He was never considered a top prospect while in the Cardinals organization. In the minors he saw time at shortstop, second base, third base, and all three outfield spots.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">If he was going to make it to the majors it would be with his utility experience. He would get an occasional start and be used as a pinch hitter\/runner and defensive replacement.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Forgotten Player<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the trade was completed Young was considered the \u201cthrow-in guy,&#8221; as Kelly and Weaver were considered the key players of the trade. Several baseball scouts were saying he would be a career minor league player.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Diamondbacks 40-Man Roster<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">The Diamondbacks added him to their 40-man roster in November 2019 with an invite to spring training. His competition for a roster spot with the team were <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/leybado01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Domingo Leyba<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rojasjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Josh Rojas<\/span><\/b><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">, and <\/span><\/span><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><a style=\"font-family: &#039;Times New Roman&#039;, serif; font-size: 16pt;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vargail01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ildemaro<\/a><\/span><\/b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><a style=\"font-family: &#039;Times New Roman&#039;, serif; font-size: 16pt;\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vargail01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Vargas<\/a>. <\/span><span style=\"color: #000000;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">He was having a good camp but was optioned to AAA Reno.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Abbreviated Season<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; line-height: 107%; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When MLB finally came up with a plan for a 2020 abbreviated season, Young was back competing for a roster spot in the \u201csummer camp.\u201d With the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2020\/03\/07\/domingo-leyba-arizona-diamondbacks-suspended\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">suspension of Leyba<\/a> it appeared he earned a roster spot.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">When the regular season started, he found himself with the team\u2019s expanded player pool at their alternate training site at Salt River Fields. Then came the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2020\/08\/12\/minnesota-twins-acquire-ildemaro-vargas\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">surprise trade of Vargas<\/a> to the Minnesota Twins, and with Josh Rojas being optioned it opened a spot. He received the news he was being called up to the big league club.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h4><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since His Call-Up<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Since his call-up, Young has made the most of his big-league opportunity. He went 2-for-2 with a double in his first-ever plate appearance against the <\/span><\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/HOU\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\">Houston Astros<\/span><\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\"> on August 4, then he hit his first home run on August 9. He has played second, third, and left field.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><b><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">New Utility Player<\/span><\/span><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">Teams today have limited roster space adding more relief pitchers so a utility player has become more valuable. Some baseball players make their name in the league by playing multiple positions.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; font-family: 'Times New Roman',serif; font-size: 16pt;\"><span style=\"color: #000000;\">And with the trade of Vargas, Young appears to be the new utility player.
