Alvarez is the New York Mets second-ranked prospect and is a catcher. While the Mets have been getting poor production from their starter Wilson Ramos, the Mets have a significant number of catchers in the player pool.

Tomas Nido has gotten off to a tremendous start following his six RBI game on Thursday. They also have Rene Rivera, Ali Sanchez, Patrick Mazeika, and Bruce Maxwell, who they just signed earlier this season.

Likewise, Allan has the potential to be a dominant pitcher in the big leagues. He was drafted in the third round but had first-round potential. The Mets starting rotation has been decimated with injuries. But still, it’s hard to see Allan make his debut with so little experience. He is currently the fifth-ranked prospect in New York’s organization.

Trade Possibility

The one aspect concerning Mets’ fans is that with both these players on the 60-man player pool. That means they can both be dealt at the end of August at the trade deadline. General Manager Brodie Van Wagenen has shown that he is willing to move prospects.

However, it hasn’t always worked out as he traded both Jarred Kelenic and Justin Dunn for Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz. Van Wagenen also has traded many prospects for depth players. He recently acquired Billy Hamilton for a prospect and has given up Anthony Kay and Simeon Woods Richardson for what the Mets hoped would be a year and a half for Marcus Stroman.

This could possibly be just a move to get both prospects an opportunity to play in intrasquad games in Brooklyn. Both players could use a full season in the minor leagues before the Mets really think about using them at the big league level.

Main Image
Embed from Getty Images

The New York Mets made a couple of interesting additions to their 60 man player pool, adding two of their top five prospects in Francisco Alvarez and Matthew Allan.
