The New York Mets<\/a> could not have asked for more from young their rookie Andres Gimenez<\/a> <\/strong>through the first 20 games of the season.\u00a0<\/span>While making the 30-man roster mainly as a pinch-runner and defensive replacement to start the year, Gimenez has turned himself into one of the best hitters<\/a> in the Mets’ lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n

He has yet to show any power, but it has been everything else that has made him a front runner for Rookie of the Year along with teammate<\/a> David Peterson<\/a><\/strong>. He plays excellent defense, can steal bases, puts the ball in play, and has helped the Mets rebound after a slow start.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Opportunity to Play<\/span><\/h2>\n

With an injury to Robinson Cano<\/a><\/strong> and the opt-out of Yoenis Cespedes<\/a><\/strong>, Gimenez has turned himself into an everyday player. However, with Cano possibly coming off the injured list on Friday and Amed Rosario<\/a><\/strong> returning from a stomach bug at some point, Manager Luis Rojas<\/strong><\/a> needs to find ways to keep Gimenez in the lineup.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Unfortunately, Jeff McNeil<\/a><\/strong> suffered a knee injury in Thursday’s game against the Wahington Nationals. While the MRI came back negative, he will likely find himself out for the weekend series in Philadelphia.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
