He won a World Series ring with the Chicago Cubs last season. Chicago declined a $12 million option on Hammel, allowing him to hit what turned out to be a rugged market.<\/p>\n<p>Hammel pitched\u00a0consistently for the Cubs after spending the last two years and parts of the 2014 season with the club, posting a 3.59 ERA and 1.14 WHIP while striking out 420 batters in 446 innings across 78 starts. His last full season away from the Cubs came in 2013, when he\u00a0racked\u00a0up\u00a0a 4.97 ERA and 1.46 WHIP with the Baltimore Orioles.<\/p>\n<p>Hammel could fit into the rotation as a solid second or third\u00a0starter behind <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duffyda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Danny Duffy<\/a><\/strong> and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kenneia01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Kennedy<\/a><\/strong>, ahead of other possible starters\u00a0like\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vargaja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jason Vargas<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strahma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Strahm<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?results=youngch04,youngch03&amp;search=Chris+Young&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Young<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/karnsna01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nate\u00a0Karns<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He will be Kansas City\u2019s third\u00a0important signing of the past three weeks, following Duffy getting a five-year, $65 million extension\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mossbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Moss<\/a><\/strong> locking in a $12 million deal for two years to be a designated hitter.<\/p>\n<p>The Royals are looking to remain in contention following a 2015 World Series win with a 2016 season riddled with injuries.
