Mikolas was initially placed on the 10-day Injured List with a right forearm strain on July 28. Since then, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/news\/miles-mikolas-has-right-forearm-strain\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">beat writer Anne Rogers<\/a> has reported that Mikolas will undergo surgery to fix his right flexor tendon, and he will consequently miss the rest of the 2020 season. In 2018, Mikolas posted a 2.83 ERA and allowed only 1.3 BB\/9. His stats faltered a little in 2019, but he remained an effective and durable starter. Mikolas pitched the team\u2019s 2020 exhibition game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/kansas-city-royals\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kansas City Royals<\/a>. He allowed two runs and five hits over four innings and 76 pitches. As the fifth pitcher in the rotation, Mikolas was slated to start Wednesday\u2019s game against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/minnesota-twins\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Minnesota Twins<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Possible Replacements<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Tuesday, the Cardinals activated <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gallegi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giovanny Gallegos<\/a><\/strong> from the injured list and recalled <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=woodfo000jak&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Woodford<\/a><\/strong> from the team\u2019s training site in Springfield. Though neither pitcher will start, Gallegos and Woodford will supplement the bullpen. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cardinals have already announced that right-hander <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/ponceda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Daniel Ponce de Leon<\/a><\/strong> will start on Wednesday. Ponce de Leon made a brief one out appearance in Saturday\u2019s victory. The 28-year-old has a career 3.29 ERA over 82 innings pitched. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Ponce de Leon may remain in the rotation, the Cardinals could also consider <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kimkw01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kwang<\/strong> <strong>Hyun Kim<\/strong><\/a> and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gombeau01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Gomber<\/a><\/strong>. Before the season began, Kim competed with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=martica04,martica03,martica02,martin019car&amp;search=Carlos+Martinez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Carlos<\/strong> <strong>Martinez<\/strong><\/a> for a starting role. In Kim\u2019s only inning for the Cardinals so far, he allowed two hits and a run. If the Cardinals are willing to abandon Kim as a closer, he could be an efficient starter. Gomber is a 26-year-old who struggled to stay healthy over the 2019 season. He would add a versatile left-handed arm to the rotation.
