Peterson, who was initially on the 60-man player pool, was left off the opening day roster.<\/p>\n<p>The start was potentially going to go to <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oswalco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Oswalt<\/a><\/strong>, but the young pitcher struggled in relief after <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porceri01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Porcello<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s short outing Sunday night against the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/teams\/ATL\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Atlanta Braves<\/a><\/strong>. He allowed five runs on seven hits as he continued to struggle when given an opportunity at the big league level. Oswalt was then optioned to the alternate training site in Brooklyn following the game.<\/p>\n<p>Since<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/syndeno01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Noah Syndergaard<\/a><\/strong> is out for the rest of the season with Tommy John surgery and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stromma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Marcus Stroman<\/a><\/strong> is on the injured list, the Mets had an open spot in the rotation.<\/p>\n<h2>David Peterson<\/h2>\n<p>Peterson, who is the Mets<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/prospects\/mets\/david-peterson-656849\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> tenth-ranked prospect<\/a> in the farm system, is a 24-year-old from Denver, Colorado. He was drafted 20th overall in the 2017 MLB draft out of Oregon but has never pitched over AA.<\/p>\n<p>The southpaw is not a hard thrower, as he generally sits from 88-91. He has terrific command of all his pitches. Peterson gets a ton of ground ball outs and increased his strikeouts from 8.1 to 9.5 in just two minor league seasons. At 6&#8217;6&#8243;, he throws from a lower arm angle than most and has four pitches in a fastball, changeup, curveball, and slider.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I like his pitchability as far as his repertoire and controlling the running game and fielding his position, Manager <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/rojaslu99.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Luis\u00a0Rojas<\/strong><\/a> said prior to <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/anthonydicomo\/status\/1287870320431382531?s=21\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Monday&#8217;s game<\/a> \u00a0&#8220;There just is a good package there.
