However, he was not drafted because his bat was considered too raw. So Martin enrolled at the University of Arkansas. Now in his junior year as a Razorback Martin could be a first-round pick. MLB.COM currently has Martin ranked as the 30th best prospect.

The former Gatorade High School Player of the Year from Lonoke High School a mere 30 minutes from Little Rock certainly left his mark at Arkansas. Before the pandemic hit Martin was on the Golden Spikes Watch List and was named a 2020 Preseason All-American. At 5’11 and 175 pounds Martin who played shortstop the past two seasons certainly has the prototypical build for a middle infielder. Martin has been described as both a potential five-tool player or a potential first-round bust.

His coach at Arkansas has said he does expect Martin to sign professionally after the draft. But the door would always be open if Martin was to come back for his senior year. Martin is taking a different approach. “I’m just waiting to see how everything plays out, then whenever everything does play out the way it’s supposed to, that’s whenever I’ll sit down and decide, OK, what’s it going to take for me to go or come back.”

Strengths

Casey Martin’s career numbers at Arkansas would make for an MVP type season. In 594 at-bats the right-handed hitting Martin slashed .310/.389/.542 with 24 homers, 116 RBI, 124 runs scored, and 24 stolen bases. He does have good power for a player with a smaller frame. Martin has a smooth athletic batting stance with fast bat speed and a slight up hill swing path with the ability to hit to all fields.

His speed is certainly a big asset even if he does not use it to its full potential. Martin has only been caught stealing three times in 27 attempts as a Razorback. Most scouts rank Martin’s speed as 70 on the 20-80 scale. Some scouts even think he is closer to 80 than 70. He throws the ball 84 MPH from the infield and 88 MPH from the outfield. Martin could eventually settle at centerfield with his speed and assuming he gets bigger.

Weaknesses

The biggest weakness of Martin is his defense. In two full seasons plus 15 games in 2020, Martin has 43 errors including five this year. Martin can make the flashy plays but has shown inconsistency on the routine plays. This could move Martin off of shortstop and into centerfield.

Martin also strikes out a lot which seems to be the norm in the major leagues these days. But his 165 whiffs is a lot for a player that has great speed who can cause havoc on the base paths. Still with his great speed scouts do want to see Martin run more on the next level.

Scouts also are questioning if Martin’s power will translate from using a metal bat to a wooden one and also seeing a lot more breaking pitches. If Martin needs to be more honest in the batter’s box could this affect his power? Martin’s overall skill set has him destined to be an up the middle player.

MLB Comparision

Casey Martin is a similar type of player to Javier Baez. Both players have aggressive swings that are prone to swing at pitches down and out of the strike zone especially breaking balls. Baez has struck out 694 times in 665 games. But he is now an elite hitting shortstop. Defensively both are flashy players. Baez averages around 15 errors a season and Martin had 43 errors in 148 games.

There is so much discussion by scouts on the projection of Casey Martin. Some scouts feel he could be more of a bust than a boom. This is based on his contact rate and defense. Martin got off to a bad start to this season and once the pandemic ended the season prematurely he never got the change to right the ship.

But other scouts feel he is special and rare. Shortstops who have power and can steal bases are like unicorns and are worth the risk of any downside Martin has in his game. There are questions swirling around Martin and where he better fits defensively.

Although ranked 30th by MLB.COM Martin could be drafted in the top 10 or fall out of the first round completely. Martin has all the look to be a true wild card pick in the first round. It will be interesting to see where he gets drafted.

Main Image
Embed from Getty Images

In 2017 Casey Martin was rated as the best High School prospect in the state of Arkansas.
