(Feb. 27) \u2013 The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/cincinnati-reds\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cincinnati Reds<\/a> slugged 10 hits, including three home runs, as their pitching staff threw a combined three-hit shutout Thursday afternoon to defeat the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/arizona-diamondbacks\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arizona Diamondbacks<\/a>, 8-0. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trevor Bauer<\/a><\/strong> earned the win in his first spring training start for the Reds. <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bumgama01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Madison Bumgarner<\/a><\/strong>, in his first spring training start for the Diamondbacks, took the loss.<\/p>\n<p>Bumgarner mowed through the first inning on 12 pitches, striking out the first two. Bauer responded with a 1-2-3 inning of his own, capping it off with a called third strike against right fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/calhoko01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kole Calhoun<\/a><\/strong> on a backdoor curveball. Bumgarner pitched another strong inning in the second, despite giving up a solo home run to first baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dietrde01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Derek Dietrich<\/a><\/strong>. Bauer responded with another perfect inning, striking out shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/ahmedni01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Ahmed<\/a><\/strong> for the third out.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reds, Diamondbacks Bats Remain Silent until the Fifth<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Neither team managed to get another hit until the top of the fifth, when Reds third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/davidma02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Davidson<\/a><\/strong> cracked a two-out double to the left-field wall. He did not score, as right fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=fairch000stu&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stuart Fairchild<\/a><\/strong> followed with a grounder to short.<\/p>\n<p>The Diamondbacks had their first hit in the bottom of the inning, as catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vogtst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Vogt<\/a><\/strong> beat out a grounder to second. It came with third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lambja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake Lamb<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 who walked two batters prior \u2013 on first and one out. Vogt hit a slow bouncer up the middle that shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/farmeky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kyle Farmer<\/a><\/strong> stopped with a dive. Farmer could not, however, regain his feet to make the throw, and the Diamondbacks had runners on first and second with one out. Left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/locasti01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tim Locastro<\/a><\/strong>, up next, smoked a hard liner toward short, but it was not quite high enough to make it to the outfield. Farmer caught it out of the air and whipped it to second to double up Lamb, ending the inning.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>Reds Light up the Scoreboard<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>After a quiet sixth by both teams, the Reds teed off in the seventh. Reserve catcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=stephe000tyl&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Stephenson<\/a><\/strong> led off against new pitcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=peacoc000mat&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Peacock<\/a><\/strong>, who spent 2019 with the Double-A <a href=\"https:\/\/www.milb.com\/jackson\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jackson Generals<\/a>. Stephenson walked on four pitches, bringing up left fielder <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/schebsc01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Scott Schebler<\/a><\/strong>. He ripped a double to center, scoring Stephenson and making the score 2-0. Two pitches later, reserve shortstop <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/blandal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Blandino<\/a><\/strong> brought Schebler home with a two-run homer to left-center. No further runs scored that inning, making the score 4-0 as the eighth began.<\/p>\n<p>The Diamondbacks ended up falling farther behind. With one out, Peacock ran into trouble again, giving up a single to pinch hitter Francisco Pe\u00f1a. Three pitches later, Stephenson sent a deep fly ball to left-center that cleared the fence by inches, making the score 6-0. That ended the day for Peacock. Reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=mccann000kev&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kevin McCanna<\/a><\/strong> took over and finished the inning without allowing any runs.<\/p>\n<p>After the game, Diamondbacks manager <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lovulto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Torey Lovullo<\/a><\/strong> called the seventh and eighth innings \u201cone of those situations where when a young pitcher comes in and makes mistakes, good hitters are gonna make you pay for it. There\u2019s a lot of lessons to be learned for some of the things that didn\u2019t go well, and I want us to improve upon that, and some of the things that did go well I was very pleased with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Reds tacked on two more runs in the ninth off reliever <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/andujmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Miguel Andujar<\/a><\/strong>. They came on a two-run double by Stephenson with the bases loaded. Lovullo said that pitching coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hergema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Herges<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 Bumgarner\u2019s bullpen coach with the San Francisco Giants in 2018-19 \u2013 said that MadBum\u2019s stuff was \u201cas good as he\u2019s seen him look out of the gate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Peacock celebrated his birthday Thursday. He turned 26.<\/p>\n<p>The Reds will host the Oakland Athletics Friday afternoon at Goodyear Ballpark. Scheduled starting pitcher <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/desclan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony DeSclafani<\/a><\/strong> will be making his spring debut.<\/p>\n<p>The Diamondbacks will host the Seattle Mariners Friday afternoon at Salt River Fields.
