The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2019\/12\/31\/yankees-top-five-moments-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Yankees<\/a> have officially announced the return of the 12-year veteran <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gardnbr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brett Gardner<\/strong><\/a>, for the 2020 season. The announcement came today, with position players set to report for Spring Training in Tampa, FL on February 17. The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2019\/12\/12\/yankees-re-sign-brett-gardner-2019\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">deal was agreed to<\/a> back on December 12th but was made official today.<\/p>\n<h3>Brett Gardner Signing<\/h3>\n<p>The Yankees PR department released a tweet today, reporting that they have re-signed outfielder Brett Gardner. The contract includes a one-year deal for the upcoming season and a club option for 2021. In order to make room on the 40-man roster, left-handed pitcher <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tarplst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Stephen Tarpley<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> has been designated for assignment.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Yankees announced today that they have re-signed OF Brett Gardner to a one-year contract for the 2020 season, with a club option for 2021. (@YankeesPR) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/YankeesPR\/status\/1216053326057549826?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">January 11, 2020<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>According to an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sny.tv\/yankees\/news\/yankees-re-sign-brett-gardner-for-2020-season\/312400392\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">SNY<\/a> article by Corey Hirsch, Gardner will be paid $12.5MM for his services and an additional $10MM if the Yankees decide to bring him back with the club option in 2021.<\/p>\n<h3>What This Means for Yankees<\/h3>\n<p>This is a stabilizing move for Brian Cashman, assuring that the veteran Gardner will be around to mentor this talented young roster. This re-signing was made all the more important with the retiring of <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2019\/10\/18\/cc-sabathia-injury-game-four\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">CC Sabathia<\/a> at the end of 2019. Clubhouse value is not all he brings to the table.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner put up solid numbers at the plate hitting 28 HR, 74 RBI, .251 Avg. and 10 stolen bases. This was truly a career year for Gardner as he had career highs in HR and RBI.<\/p>\n<p>Gardner was also an integral piece on defense, playing much of the season in center field due to an injury to <a style=\"font-weight: bold;\" href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2019\/10\/24\/aaron-hicks-to-have-tommy-john-surgery\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Hicks<\/a>. With Hicks recovering from October <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/johnto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tommy John<\/a><\/strong> surgery, Gardner will be the go-to option for center field.
