In just three days the super agent negotiated $814 million worth of contracts for three players: pitchers <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strasst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stephen Strasburg<\/a><\/strong> ($245 million, 7 years), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colege01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Gerrit<\/strong> <strong>Cole<\/strong><\/a> ($324 million, 9 years), and third baseman <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rendoan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony Rendon<\/a><\/strong> ($245 million, 7 years). With Boras\u2019s show of force out of the way, now is a good time to survey the MLB landscape, as those three deals have World Series implications. With that being said, here is Last Word on Baseball\u2019s early look at next season\u2019s World Series favorites.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>New York Yankees<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/new-york-yankees\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New York Yankees<\/a> have proven they are top contenders for the World Series. They won 103 games last season, with a power-packed lineup led by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Judge<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/torregl01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gleyber Torres<\/a><\/strong>. Sure enough the Yankees made it to the ALCS. But their lack of a true-ace reared its ugly head against the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/mlb-teams\/houston-astros\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Houston Astros<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, the Yankees giving\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gerrit Cole<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0that <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonbaseball.com\/2019\/12\/10\/new-york-yankees-signs-gerrit-cole\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">astronomical deal <\/a>is an all-in move, as last season\u2019s<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/youngcy01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cy Young<\/a><\/strong> Award runner-up is in his prime. In short, he could be the missing piece to New York\u2019s championship puzzle. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pundits and bookmakers have taken notice, with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.bwin.com\/en\/sports\/23\/betting\/baseball\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bwin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> listing the Yankees as the favorites to win next year\u2019s World Series. Mike Oz of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/no-excuses-for-the-yankees-after-giving-gerrit-cole-a-record-324-million-contract-073734420.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yahoo! Sports<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> sums up it best, noting how Cole\u2019s signing brings forth \u201cskyscrapers-sized expectations.\u201d Anything less than a championship would be a failure for the Yankees, who seem to be reverting back to their exorbitant approach to free agency.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Houston Astros<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Losing Cole was a big blow for the Astros. But this franchise was built on a philosophy of sustainability. That means fielding a roster that can contend every single year. Besides, the Astros have more than enough talent to again make a World Series run. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They still have<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/verlaju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Verlander<\/a><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack Greinke<\/a><\/strong>, as well as the soon-to-return <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcculla01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Lance McCullers<\/a><\/strong> Jr. The Astros will also have their superstar trio of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/altuvjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Altuve<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bregmal01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alex Bregman<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/correca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Carlos Correa<\/a><\/strong>, along with <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/springe01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Springer<\/a><\/strong>, reigning Rookie of they Year <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alvaryo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Yordan Alvarez<\/a><\/strong>, and top prospect <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tuckeky01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Kyle<\/strong> <strong>Tucker<\/strong><\/a>. Sure the 2019 AL champions are less fearsome without Cole. But the Astros remain one of the best teams in all of baseball; so don\u2019t be surprised if they win the World Series again next season.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Los Angeles Dodgers<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before the winter meetings, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ocregister.com\/2019\/12\/07\/dodgers-have-flexibility-to-make-moves-but-do-they-have-motivation\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Andrew<\/strong> <strong>Friedman<\/strong><\/a>, the Dodgers\u2019 president of baseball operations,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong>pointed out that this team could stay put and still contend for a championship.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> The Dodgers, in fact, have been perennial contenders for years although they haven\u2019t won a World Series championship just yet. They\u2019ll be favorites again this year, with a versatile lineup headlined by <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/seageco01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Corey Seager<\/a><\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellico01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Cody<\/strong> <strong>Bellinger<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turneju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Justin Turner<\/a><\/strong>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/muncyma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Max<\/strong> <strong>Muncy<\/strong><\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, they could use a player or two to fortify both their starting rotation and bullpen, but at the moment the Dodgers are still a strong team and 2020 could be the year they finally breakthrough.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Washington Nationals<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reigning world champions defied the odds last season, but they had big-time talent to begin with. The<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/scherma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Scherzer<\/a><\/strong>-Strasburg duo led the team to great heights. Rendon, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sotoju01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Juan<\/strong> <strong>Soto<\/strong><\/a>, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kendrho01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Howie Kendrick<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/turnetr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trea Turner<\/a><\/strong> also performed strongly.
