There were some promising parts of the year especially with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suareeu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Eugenio Suarez<\/strong><\/a><strong>\u2019<\/strong> offensive outburst, the development of <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=castilu02,castilu01,castil014lui,castil020lui,castil019lui,castil018lui&amp;search=Luis+Castillo&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Castillo<\/a><\/strong> into an ace, and the emergence of young prospects in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/aquinar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Aristides Aquino<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/senzeni01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Nick Senzel<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> However, despite all the promising things that occurred in 2019, it was still a frustrating season in the Queen City. If the Reds are going to put together a strong team, here are some areas they will have to address or improve if they want to be serious contenders in 2020.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Starting Pitching<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cincinnati has a rotation that could be one of the best in 2020, especially with Luis Castillo&#8217;s development, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Sonny Gray<\/strong><\/a> putting up great numbers in 2019, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bauertr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Trevor Bauer<\/strong><\/a> for a full season. The fourth and fifth spots in the rotation might be held by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/desclan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Anthony DeSclafani<\/strong><\/a> and most likely <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mahlety01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tyler Mahle<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> but it wouldn\u2019t hurt to get one more starting pitcher in the offseason. DeSclafani has had a history of injuries and Mahle has regressed, so it would make some sense to get another reliable starter on the market. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some candidates could be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/keuchda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Dallas Keuchel<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=moorema02,moore-005mat&amp;search=Matt+Moore&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Matt Moore<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porceri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Rick Porcello<\/strong><\/a><strong>, or<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/roarkta01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tanner Roark<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> While the rotation isn\u2019t necessarily a must need, getting another pitcher that could take them over the top is what could be the difference.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Catcher<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/barnhtu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Tucker Barnhart<\/strong><\/a> had done an admirable job being a starting catcher and is an exceptional defender, but his bat has sadly regressed. While a very capable backup at this point in his career, an upgrade is a must at the backstop position. There really aren\u2019t many options on the table. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/darnatr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Travis d\u2019Arnaud<\/strong><\/a> is a possibility, but Cincinnati will have to hope that a couple of other players who have options will become available. The two that come to mind are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grandya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Yasmani Grandal<\/strong><\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gomesya01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Yan Gomes<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> but Grandal would be a hot commodity. There is always the option of trading for a catcher, but the problem is that the Reds would have to give up something.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Bullpen<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The bullpen looked like it was going to be a strength going into 2019, but with the struggles of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesra01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Raisel Iglesias<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=hernada01,hernan011dav&amp;search=David+Hernandez&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>David Hernandez<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/peralwa01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Wandy Peralta<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dukeza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Zach Duke<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hugheja02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jared Hughes<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> it became their weakest part of their team. Hernandez, Hughes, and Dukes were let go and Peralta was demoted. There are some arms on the team to build around like <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lorenmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Michael Lorenzen<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stephro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Robert Stephenson<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garream01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Amir Garrett<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> but the team must look on the market for reliable bullpen arms. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some options include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/brachbr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brad Brach<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cishest01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Steve Cishek<\/strong><\/a><strong>, <\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hudsoda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Daniel Hudson<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/jeffrje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jeremy Jeffress<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?pid=smithjo05,smithjo03,smith-012joe&amp;search=Joe+Smith&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Joe Smith<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dunnmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Dunn<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/diekmja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jake Diekman<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong>\u00a0or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/morrobr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Brandon Morrow<\/strong><\/a><strong>.<\/strong> The bullpen must be a priority this offseason, but maybe they have some in-house options who can fill the voids too.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Whichever Position Nick Senzel Doesn\u2019t Play<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is some division in the Cincinnati Reds faithful over where Nick Senzel should play as he looked competent in centerfield, but he is a better fielder at second base. So, if he were to be the regular center fielder, then second base will need an upgrade. Sure <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/galvifr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Freddy Galvis<\/strong><\/a> played well enough there, but they need more productivity from that position. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn\u2019t much on the market outside of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harrijo05.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Josh Harrison<\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moustmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Mike Moustakas<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kipnija01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jason Kipnis<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> so the team is more likely to make a trade. If Senzel becomes the starting second baseman, the most likely option is them going after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martest01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Starling Marte<\/strong><\/a> to play center field if he becomes available due to his option or they would have to trade for one. It will be interesting to see what Cincinnati does here.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Shortstop<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesjo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jose Iglesias<\/strong><\/a> played admirably at shortstop and might get another contract again for more of a backup role as he was productive at the plate and is a defensive whiz, but the Reds need an upgrade at that position. The most obvious player that\u2019s available on the market is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gregodi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Didi Gregorius<\/strong><\/a> as he would fit the need perfectly. That being said, they might look to make a trade here too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The team will also have to ask <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/winkeje01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Jesse Winker<\/strong><\/a> to return to his 2018 performance, for Aquino to pick up where he left off, for Bauer to show that his 2019 second half was a fluke, and for Gray and Castillo to replicate their success and that\u2019s not easy. There are a few other suggestions that the club could make during the offseason. If they do not trust Winker to return to form, then they will undoubtedly go out and grab a player either off the market or through trade and it depends whether they want to keep Aquino in right field or shift him to left field. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another suggestion is to go after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rendoan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Anthony Rendon<\/strong><\/a><strong>,<\/strong> but there are two ways they can go about that. The first is that the team shifts Suarez over to shortstop, his natural position, and have Rendon play third base. The second is to have Rendon play second base and keep Senzel in center field. Rendon will come with a high price tag that most Major League teams can&#8217;t afford.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Outlook<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Cincinnati Reds will have to do a lot this offseason if they want to be serious contenders, but the club is closer than some might think. 2020 might not be the frustrating year some will expect, but the team could flounder if they don\u2019t make the right moves.
