However, given the weak free agent class and\u00a0<strong>Dave Dombrowski<\/strong>&#8216;s insistence that the club would not make any big moves, it seemed likely they would enter 2017 with a staff that largely resembled the 2016 group. The 21-year-old raked at every level of the minor leagues, and\u00a0saw a meteoric rise to the majors.<\/p>\n<p>However, he struggled mightily after making his major league debut last season, and seemed like a man without a position. A natural second baseman, he was blocked by veteran\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pedrodu01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dustin Pedroia<\/a><\/strong>. He could have transitioned to third base, but the success of such a move would hardly have been guaranteed. Moncada still has all the tools to be great, and should anchor the White Sox lineup down the road.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=kopech000mic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Kopech<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0ranked as the top pitcher in the Red Sox system. The young fireballer can hit triple digits on the radar gun. Though he still needs to refine his control, he showed a great deal of improvement as the minor league season wore on. The 20-year-old spent 2016 in between <strong>Low-A Lowell<\/strong> and <strong>High-A Salem<\/strong>, and went\u00a04-1 with a 2.08 ERA.<\/p>\n<p>The Red Sox will also send <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=basabe000lui&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Luis Alexander Basabe<\/a><\/strong> and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?results=diazvi01,diaz--010vic,diaz--008vic&amp;search=Victor+Diaz&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Victor Diaz<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0in exchange for Sale, who is perhaps the best pitcher in the\u00a0<strong>American League<\/strong>. Last season, Sale won 17 games while pitching to a 3.34 ERA, a 1.04 WHIP, and 233 strikeouts. For his career, he owns a 3.00 ERA and 1,244 punchouts.<\/p>\n<p>Still just 27 years old, Sale has thus far only pitched for Chicago in his six years of MLB service. He represents a clear upgrade to Boston&#8217;s rotation; a 1-2-3 of Sale,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/porceri01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rick Porcello<\/a><\/strong>, and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/priceda01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">David Price<\/a><\/strong> looks deadly on paper.
