With the offseason in full swing and the <strong>Winter Meetings<\/strong> coming up, the Rockies must\u00a0address specific needs if they want to compete\u00a0in 2017.<span class=\"yiv8452341278Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">Colorado Rockies 2016 Offseason Needs<\/span><\/strong><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3974\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3973\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">1. Trade for a Top-Tier Pitcher<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3977\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3976\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">The 2016-2017 starting pitching free agent class is weak. The Rockies have enough pitching, but not enough good pitching. None of the current free agent pitchers look to good enough to come into <strong>Coors Field<\/strong> and replace any of the incumbents.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3979\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3980\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">Therefore, they should trade from their abundance of offense to get some top pitching. This is very open-ended and there are\u00a0countless potential deals to be made.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong>Trade for Zack Greinke<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3982\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3981\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">One option would be to trade for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/greinza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack Greinke<\/a><\/strong>. He definitely struggled in his first year with the <strong>Arizona Diamondbacks<\/strong>, but is still a top pitcher. If anything, his struggles make him more available now than ever. Given his big contract, the Diamondbacks may not hesitate to trade him elsewhere. Perhaps trading <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lemahdj01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">DJ LeMahieu<\/a><\/strong> for Greinke and cash would work. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3981\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">If the Diamondbacks want to have any money to spend in the future, then Greinke has to go. They would also be adding a second baseman who just won a batting title. They could move <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/owingch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Owings<\/a><\/strong> to shortstop and put the newly-acquired <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marteke01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ketel Marte<\/a><\/strong> on the bench, giving them solid infield depth. The Rockies would be selling LeMahieu when his value is highest and adding an ace.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong>Make a Deal for a Mets Pitcher<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3985\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3984\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">If a deal for Greinke doesn&#8217;t work out, the Rockies could always turn to\u00a0the <strong>New York Mets<\/strong>, who they&#8217;ve been paired with in trade rumors for years. Though\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/colonba01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bartolo Colon<\/a><\/strong> signed with the <strong>Atlanta Braves<\/strong>, the Mets have a surplus of pitching once everybody gets healthy. They will have <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harvema01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Matt Harvey<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/degroja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jacob deGrom<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/syndeno01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Noah Syndergaard<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wheelza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack Wheeler<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/matzst01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Steven Matz<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gsellro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Gsellman<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lugose01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Seth Lugo<\/a><\/strong>. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3984\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">Harvey and Wheeler have surfaced\u00a0in trade rumors before and could be potentially available. Also, Lugo and Gsellman&#8217;s future is murky once everybody comes back. They have proven they should be starters; instead of pushing them both to the bullpen, the Mets could trade one or both of them.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">2. Trade for Ian Kennedy<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3986\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">This is not as open-ended as the previous need. The Rockies should trade for <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kenneia01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ian Kennedy<\/a><\/strong> of the <strong>Kansas City Royals<\/strong>. This is not a common idea held by many, but it actually makes sense for both teams. <\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong>The Case for Kennedy<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">The Rockies need a lot of quality help in the pitching department. With the pitching market so weak, they will have to get creative with trades if they want to compete. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">Why Kennedy? For starters, if they get a high-level pitcher like Greinke, they will then have to look at more economical pitchers in terms of prospects and money. Also, Colorado can&#8217;t simply look for any talented pitcher to come into Coors and pitch well. Even the best pitchers have failed at that task.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\"> Kennedy, however, has actually pitched well at Coors. In 62.2 innings, he has a 3.16 ERA. Among pitchers with more innings pitched at Coors, only <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anderty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Anderson<\/a><\/strong>&#8216;s 3.00 ERA is lower.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong>Why This Can Work<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3988\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3987\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">One of the biggest problems with this trade would be Kennedy&#8217;s availability. His name hasn&#8217;t been part of many trade rumors. However, he was thought to be available <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mlbtraderumors.com\/ian-kennedy\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">near the trade deadline<\/a> back in July. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3987\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">The Royals are paying him a lot of money at\u00a0a time when that could restrict their future success. Next year, they will have multiple free agents and not enough money to retain them all. Most of those players would be more worthwhile to keep. Therefore, if the Rockies contacted the Royals, a deal could be realistic. <\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3987\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">If the Rockies were willing to take on his entire salary, they probably wouldn&#8217;t need to give up any big prospects. On the flip-side, if Colorado\u00a0gave up some decent prospects, the Royals may be willing to eat some of his backloaded contract.<span class=\"yiv8452341278Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">3. Address the Bullpen<\/span><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3992\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3991\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">The Rockies finished dead last in bullpen ERA, at 5.13 ERA. Luckily for them, there are some big-name closers on the free agent market. Of course, these guys will cost an arm and a leg so they have to spend wisely.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong>If the Rockies Don&#8217;t Address the Previous Two Needs:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">The reason why this need is third is because the Rockies will have to play the reliever market by ear. If they fulfill the first two needs, their rotation could consist of Greinke, Kennedy, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chatwty01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tyler Chatwood<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bettich01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chad Bettis<\/a><\/strong>, and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rosajo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jorge De La Rosa<\/a><\/strong>. Anderson and <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rusinch01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Rusin<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0who in limited starts had ERAs of 3.54 and 3.74, respectively, could technically be in that mix. At the very least, they can be the next men up if anyone falters. That also gives 24-year-old <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayjo02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jon Gray<\/a><\/strong> a chance to perfect his craft, either in the bullpen or the minors. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>If the Rockies can&#8217;t get that type of pitching, they should pursue an elite closer. While <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ottavad01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Ottavino<\/a><\/strong> did a solid job during his seven saves, replacing him would strengthen the entire bullpen. That would give the Rockies both an elite closer and setup man.<\/p>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">One option\u00a0is <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/melanma01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mark Melancon<\/a><\/strong>. Over\u00a0the last couple of years, he has been one of the top closers in baseball. In 2015, he saved 51 games to go along with a 2.23 ERA. In 2016, he notched 47 saves\u00a0and a 1.64 ERA. He would be a good fit for any team, which is why he is drawing interest from many.<span class=\"yiv8452341278Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3994\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_3993\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">Another option is\u00a0<strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aroldis Chapman<\/a><\/strong>. Chapman helped the <strong>Chicago Cubs<\/strong> win their first <strong>World Series<\/strong> in 108 years and is looking to cash in on his performance from the last few seasons. Early reports said he was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-us\/sports\/mlb\/report-aroldis-chapman-looking-for-dollar100-million-deal\/ar-AAk6FEJ\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">looking for a $100 million deal<\/a>. That is certainly an amount of money the Rockies should stay away from. If that price came down to earth, then Colorado should inquire.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><strong>If the Rockies Address the Previous Two Needs:<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">A bullpen arm of the likes of Chapman or Melancon isn&#8217;t as big a priority if they can solidify the rotation. In that case, inexpensive relievers like <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/blevije01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jerry Blevins<\/a><\/strong> make more sense. If they can&#8217;t replace a rotation that hasn&#8217;t pitched well enough to keep the Rockies relevant, then closers like Chapman or Melancon should be a priority.<span class=\"yiv8452341278Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_4012\" class=\"yiv8452341278p1\"><span id=\"yui_3_16_0_1_1480211480454_4014\" class=\"yiv8452341278s1\">The time of the Rockies signing low-level pitchers and seeing who sticks should end.
