While it was far from a storybook season for the Reds, it was however a textbook season in terms of the ups and downs of trying to rebuild an organization entering the twilight period for the careers of several players that initially brought the team to prominence.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s take a look back at some key points and notes from the Reds&#8217; 2016 season and some key moves that may shape the way the team moves forward.<\/p>\n<h2>Key Notes<\/h2>\n<p><em><strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vottojo01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joey Votto<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> Still Dominant: <\/em>After a slow start to the season, Votto posted an OPS above 1.000 for each of the last four months and combined for 20 HR, 7-7 stolen bases, and 49 XBH. The 33-year old <strong>Canada<\/strong> native finished 2016 with a .326\/.434\/.550 slash line and a team-high WAR of 4.0, which is an incredibly encouraging sign for the Cincinnati organization who has Votto signed on until 2023 on that super lucrative $225MM deal.<\/p>\n<p><em>Young Arms and Mixed Signals: <\/em>The Reds decided to say goodbye to 26-year old <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?results=lambjo02,lambjo01&amp;search=John+Lamb&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">John Lamb<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> this off season, sending him to <strong>Tampa Bay<\/strong> in exchange for cash, after Lamb had struggled with a 6.17 ERA and 1.60 WHIP in his 24 total starts in Cincinnati. Other struggling young starters included top-shelf prospects <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/search\/search.fcgi?results=reedco01,reed--003cod&amp;search=Cody+Reed&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cody Reed<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stephro01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Robert Stephenson<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>; while <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/finnebr01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Finnegan<\/a><\/strong>, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/desclan01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Anthony DeSclafani<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, and surprisingly <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/straida01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dan Straily<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> all had strong seasons and are 27 years old or younger.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the roller coaster ride the rotation went through, the bullpen went through even more turmoil. Even though it was possibly the worst bullpen in the history of the <strong>MLB<\/strong>, the young guns showed some signs of promise. <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cingrto01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tony Cingrani<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> was hot and cold with no indication of future consistent play, but <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lorenmi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Lorenzen<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> produced a 2.88 ERA and 1.08 WHIP in 50 IP as the Reds setup man and <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/i\/iglesra01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Raisel Iglesias<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> posted a 1.98 ERA and 0.96 WHIP since he transitioned to the bullpen.<\/p>\n<p><em>Injury Woes: <\/em>With core pieces of years past like <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/baileho02.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Homer Bailey<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mesorde01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Devin Mesoraco<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and sneaky acquisition from the <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aroldis Chapman<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> deal, <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cothaca01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Caleb Cotham,<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> still sidelined by injury with no clear indication of where they could stand in the next few seasons, it still leaves the Reds with big question marks as to what they can count on and what they may need to replace.<\/p>\n<p><em>Important Moves:<\/em> In addition to the aforementioned Lamb deal that happened this off-season, the Reds also pulled off some key transactions. They traded <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bruceja01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jay Bruce<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> to the <strong>New York<\/strong> <strong>Mets<\/strong> for <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=wotell000max&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Max Wotell<\/a><\/strong> <\/strong>and <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/herredi01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dilson Herrera<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, they signed <strong>Cuban<\/strong> pitching prospect <strong>Vladimir Gutierrez<\/strong>, and they also claimed the still young former prospect <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/alcanar01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Arismendy Alcantara<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>. One does still have to wonder if the Reds were too hesitant to pull the trigger on players like <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cozarza01.shtml?utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Zack Cozart<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> and whether they missed out on cashing in on some peak returns.<\/p>\n<h2>The New Prospects<\/h2>\n<p>The Reds grabbed <strong>Tennessee<\/strong> third baseman <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=senzel000nic&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Senzel<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> with the second overall pick in the <strong>2016 MLB Draft<\/strong>, and he didn&#8217;t take long to adjust to the pro game. In 251 PA for <strong>Single-A Dayton<\/strong> he produced a .982 OPS, 33 XBH, and 15 stolen bases.<\/p>\n<p>Catching prospect <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=okey--001chr&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chris Okey<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> of <strong>Clemson<\/strong> hit six HR and stole five bases for the <strong>Dayton Dragons.<\/strong> Undrafted free agent signee, <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=friedl000tj-&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">T.J. Friedl,<\/a><\/strong><\/strong> produced a .969 OPS with seven steals for the <strong>Billings Mustangs.<\/strong> And former high school football star from the state of <strong>Georgia,<\/strong> <strong><strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=tramme000tay&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Taylor Trammell<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>, was able to steal 24 bases in just 228 AB in Billings.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps most intriguing is the project reliever from <strong>Texas A&amp;M, <strong><a href=\"http:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.cgi?id=hendri002rya&amp;utm_campaign=Linker&amp;utm_source=direct&amp;utm_medium=linker-lastwordonbaseball.com\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Hendrix<\/a><\/strong><\/strong>.
