In just his fourth season in the Majors, Goodman has been the <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/07\/06\/hunter-goodman-announced-lone-rockies-all-star\/\" target=\"_self\">Rockies&#8217; sole representative<\/a> at the Midsummer Classic the last two seasons. He is <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/01\/hunter-goodman-home-runs\/\" target=\"_self\">having a historic season<\/a> for the Rockies from the catcher&#8217;s position, currently ranking third in the Majors with 31 home runs, including five multi-homer games and two three-homer games as well. The big question now is how much longer Goodman will be in purple.<\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBu3vZQzkW\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072\/2048;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2>Rockies Fielding Calls on Hunter Goodman<\/h2>\n<p>Per Jorge Castillo of ESPN, the <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/49410877\/2026-mlb-trade-deadline-tracker-rumors-alerts-news-latest-updates-analysis\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Rockies are fielding calls<\/a> on Hunter Goodman from several teams, including the New York Yankees. The Rockies are one of three teams so far to declare themselves sellers at the deadline in what will be a seller&#8217;s market. They have already been active, <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/20\/seth-halvorsen-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">trading reliever Seth Halvorsen<\/a> to their National League West rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers, on July 20. Some of the players that will be available are RHP <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/senzaan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Antonio Senzatela<\/a>, outfielders <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/moniami01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mickey Moniak<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mccarja02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jake McCarthy<\/a>, and utility man <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/castrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willi Castro<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The Rockies reportedly don&#8217;t want to move Goodman, but his value has stayed sky-high post All-Star break. He&#8217;s already had four home runs in the Rockies&#8217; first five games of the second half, including a three-home-run performance on July 19 in a 9-6 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Coors Field. Making it five home runs in five games for Goodman vs the Reds this season.<\/p>\n<p>After reading that, most people would assume he is yet another product of Coors Field. But 18 of his 31 home runs, four of his five multi-homer games, and 33 of his 57 RBI have come on the road. So there&#8217;s no previous deadline to look at for reference. But judging by their <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/01\/29\/the-rockies-offseason-so-far-is-a-good-sign-of-things-to-come\/\" target=\"_self\">initial offseason moves<\/a>, the Rockies aren&#8217;t afraid to be aggressive in the trade market under their new regime.<\/p>\n<p>The new front office has already made two trades inside the NL West since last January. From 2020-24, the entire division made one trade with each other, between the San Diego Padres and the Dodgers. They are also fielding calls on him, so while they would prefer to keep Goodman, they are listening, and if the right offer presents itself, they might jump at it, while Goodman&#8217;s value is highest. The question is, what offer would make the Rockies jump?<\/p>\n<h2>What Offer Would the Rockies Accept for Hunter Goodman?<\/h2>\n<p>Reason suggests any offer for Goodman would have to include premier pitching. The Rockies have an extraordinarily difficult time wooing starting pitching talent to Colorado in free agency. So they have to build their pitching ranks through the draft and trades. Unfortunately, the recent misses in the draft left the Rockies&#8217; new front office with quite the repair job when it came to fixing the starting rotation. DePodesta said it would be his top priority this offseason, and he did an admirable job. Patchworking the rotation for the first half with veterans <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suganto01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tomoyuki Sugano<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lorenmi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Michael Lorenzen<\/a>, who could be on the move themselves.<\/p>\n<p>But both players are north of 34, and the Rockies need a sustainable stable of starting pitchers going forward. There won&#8217;t be a better opportunity to jump-start that process than at the deadline. The biggest piece you have to offer for that pitching talent is Goodman. There is a lack of right-handed hitting available, which is also working in the Rockies&#8217; favor this deadline. The Yankees are reportedly interested and could be a dancing partner for the Rockies.<\/p>\n<h3>Could the Rockies Deal Hunter Goodman to the Yankees?<\/h3>\n<p>The Yankees have a clear need for Goodman. Their primary catcher, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/wellsau01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Austin Wells,<\/a> and backup catcher <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/escarjc01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">J.C. Escarra<\/a> are both hitting well below the Mendoza line with a combined six home runs, all coming from Wells. Additionally, their catching tandem are both left-handed hitters. Goodman would be a clear upgrade offensively, and his 17.5% barrel rate (97th percentile league-wide per <a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/hunter-goodman-696100?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Statcast<\/a>) would mesh very well with the short porch at Yankee Stadium. Goodman is a slight downgrade defensively to Wells, but nothing major, and the significant offensive upgrade Goodman would be makes the defense a moot point.<\/p>\n<p>The Yankees also have the cache in their farm system to intrigue the Rockies. They have three quality right-handers that round out the top five of their top 30, per <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/milb\/prospects\/yankees\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">MLB Pipeline<\/a>. All three have the projected ceiling of mid-to-frontline rotation starting pitchers.<\/p>\n<p>With the Rockies&#8217; clear need for more starting pitching, it&#8217;s hard to imagine a deal comes across for Goodman without one of these three pitchers included. He carries an above-average fastball and is projected as a mid-rotation starter. Outside <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/dollach01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Chase Dollander<\/a> and potentially <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hughega01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Gabriel Hughes<\/a>, the Rockies&#8217; starting pitching pipeline is incredibly thin. Would Rodriguez in a package be enough for the Rockies to pull the trigger on dealing Goodman? Will Goodman be the proverbial &#8220;sacrificial lamb&#8221; for the future of the Rockies rotation?
