Every July, contenders search for one move that can separate them from the rest of the playoff field.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes it’s a frontline starter.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sometimes it’s a middle-of-the-order bat.<\/span><\/p>\n

But championship teams understand that October is often won in the bullpen<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

That’s why Josh Hader<\/a> would immediately become one of the most valuable players available if the Astros decided to listen to offers.

To be clear, Houston<\/a> has little incentive to move him. Hader remains under contract beyond 2026, continues to pitch at an elite level, and gives the Astros one of baseball’s premier late-inning weapons. League insiders still view a trade as unlikely, but with Houston fighting to remain in contention and the deadline approaching, rival executives will undoubtedly make calls.<\/span><\/p>\n

Unlike rental relievers, Hader offers something far more valuable<\/a>: certainty. Any acquiring team would control one of baseball’s best closers for multiple postseason runs, dramatically increasing his trade value.<\/span><\/p>\n

If Houston were to entertain offers, here’s where the conversations should begin.<\/span><\/p>\n

1. Chicago Cubs<\/span><\/h2>\n

The Cubs<\/a> make the most sense.<\/span><\/p>\n

Chicago has emerged as one of the National League’s top contenders, but Jed Hoyer knows postseason baseball often comes down to bullpen depth.<\/span><\/p>\n

Craig Counsell also knows Hader as well as anyone in baseball after managing him during his peak years in Milwaukee. There would be virtually no adjustment period. Hader could immediately reclaim the ninth inning while allowing every other reliever to slide into more natural roles.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because Hader has years of club control remaining, Houston would ask for a significant return.<\/span><\/p>\n
