Pittsburgh entered Tuesday at 52-49 and tied with the St. Louis Cardinals for the final Wild Card position. Every game matters, and returning one of the lineup\u2019s most dangerous hitters would provide an obvious boost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That does not mean Cruz should be rushed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBAmLwkk7D\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4628px; aspect-ratio: 4628\/6941;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pirates moved Cruz to the 60-day injured list on July 18 as he continues recovering from non-displaced fractures in the fourth and fifth metacarpals of his left hand. Manager <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/kellydo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Don Kelly<\/a> said the move was not the result of a setback, but Cruz is not expected to begin a minor-league rehabilitation assignment until early August.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh needs Cruz for the stretch run. More importantly, it needs a healthy version of Cruz capable of driving the baseball rather than a compromised hitter returning only because the standings create pressure.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Oneil Cruz Return Timeline Has Already Shifted<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruz initially suffered the injury while sliding into home plate against the Atlanta Braves on June 6. The fractures did not appear on the first set of X-rays, and Cruz attempted to work through the discomfort before an MRI revealed the damage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He was placed on the injured list retroactive to June 8. Cruz was cleared to begin gripping activities on June 22, shed the cast and started swinging in Bradenton on July 7. A player going from the 10-day injured list to the 60-day injured list often sounds like evidence of a significant setback. In Cruz\u2019s case, Pittsburgh needed a spot on the 40-man roster, and Kelly said there had been no new injury.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, the revised schedule shows that Cruz needs more time.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He must progress from controlled swings to facing live pitching, complete a rehab assignment and prove that the hand can withstand repeated contact. Checking those boxes is more important than forcing him back for a particular series.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Hand Injury Could Directly Affect Cruz\u2019s Greatest Strength<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruz\u2019s game is built around force.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His bat speed and raw power allow him to produce contact few players can match. Before the injury, he had an .822 OPS with 14 home runs and 21 stolen bases. It was the best sustained offensive stretch of his major-league career and continued the progress visible during<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/12\/oneil-cruz-whats-sustainable-what-isnt-what-to-expect\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_self\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruz\u2019s strong opening month<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hitter can be medically cleared without immediately regaining his normal swing. Hand injuries can affect grip strength, bat control and a player\u2019s willingness to attack inside pitches. Even slight hesitation could limit the traits that make Cruz so dangerous. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That creates a risk Pittsburgh should avoid.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bringing Cruz back before he is fully comfortable could leave him unable to drive the ball or protect the plate. A poor stretch would not necessarily mean his earlier production was unsustainable. It could simply mean his hand was not ready for major-league pitching. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pirates should judge his readiness through the quality of his swings, not the number of days remaining on the schedule.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pirates\u2019 Improved Lineup Creates Breathing Room<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh does not have to treat every additional day without Cruz as an offensive emergency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pirates have continued producing during his absence, helped by the emergence of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valdees01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Esmerlyn Valdez<\/a> and contributions from <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reynobr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Bryan Reynolds<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ohearry01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan O\u2019Hearn<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lowebr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Lowe<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzani01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nick Gonzales<\/a>. Valdez has supplied the type of impact power the lineup previously depended on Cruz to provide almost by himself.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His immediate production has made<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/30\/valdez-what-pirates-need\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_self\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valdez one of Pittsburgh\u2019s most important young hitters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The idea that the Pirates should consider<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/16\/trading-oneil-cruz-would-be-a-terrible-idea-for-the-pirates\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_self\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trading Cruz because the offense survived his absence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ignores the difference between maintaining production and reaching the lineup\u2019s full ceiling. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It does mean the Pirates can remain competitive without rushing him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Valdez\u2019s emergence allows Pittsburgh to let Cruz complete a proper rehab process. A productive lineup should be viewed as protection against an unnecessarily aggressive timetable, not as evidence that Cruz has become expendable.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Cruz Still Changes Pittsburgh\u2019s Postseason Ceiling<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Pirates can survive without Cruz for another couple of weeks. But their chances of making a meaningful postseason run would still improve with him in the lineup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cruz brings a combination of power and speed that changes how opponents pitch. He can turn a mistake into a home run, create pressure on the bases and alter a game without needing several hits. Few players on Pittsburgh\u2019s roster possess that type of individual upside.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His return would also deepen the batting order. Kelly would not have to ask the same hitters to carry the offense every night, and opposing pitchers would have fewer comfortable sections of the lineup to navigate.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There will still be decisions to make. Cruz\u2019s<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/27\/oneil-cruz-center-field-where-do-pirates-go-from-here\/?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" target=\"_self\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defense in center field has produced questions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and Pittsburgh must determine how its outfield pieces fit once everyone is healthy. Those questions should still not influence the medical timeline.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The priority is getting Cruz\u2019s bat back to full strength. Lineup construction and defensive alignment can be addressed afterward.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Pirates Need the Right Version of Cruz<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Oneil Cruz return should occur when his hand, swing and timing are ready\u2014not when impatience reaches its highest point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pittsburgh is involved in a close Wild Card race. The temptation to accelerate the process will grow with every important loss, especially when the offense struggles. That pressure cannot become the deciding factor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few additional games without Cruz would be frustrating.
