The Mets saw Robert’s potential when healthy and took a chance on a low-risk, high-reward trade. Sadly, for both the team and Robert, he has yet to be fully healthy this season. He only played 24 games early on before going on the injured list with a lumbar disc herniation. Also, with the Mets officially in sell mode, it seems as if everyone is on the table, including a guy like Robert. He could be an interesting piece that the team may try to move on from.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBwipl8GCU" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000/1694;" ></smartframe-embed>

Could The Mets Trade Luis Robert Jr. at the Deadline?

With the dawn of the Mets’ youth movement amid the arrival of the rookies in Carson Benge and A.J. Ewing, it seems as if there isn’t much of a spot for Robert in this outfield. With Juan Soto, Benge, and Ewing as the team’s outfield trio for the foreseeable future, the only other spot for Robert could be the DH spot. However, if he continues to struggle as he did before he got sent to the IL, there might not be much of a place for him on this team after all.

So far, Robert’s stats through the 24 games are a .224 average, two homers, and eight RBI. Of course, he will get playing time when he comes back, as manager Andy Green has stated, which could be as early as the series against the Milwaukee Brewers starting on July 20th. With just about two weeks left before the deadline, the Mets will have to decide on Robert and whether or not they see a spot for him on this team in the future, or if they want to move on from his short tenure in the orange and blue.

Robert Could Be An Enticing Piece For Some Contenders

The Mets could get a decent haul out of Robert if they look to ship him elsewhere. At just 28 years old, he still has a lot of potential, looking past his injury history. He is a solid defender, having won the Gold Glove Award once. He is also someone who has a lot of pop in his bat, as he had a career-high 38 homers in the 2023 season, in which he was an All-Star. Robert still holds a good amount of value that can play in the Mets’ favor.

Luis Robert Jr. with a two-run blast for Triple-A Syracuse pic.twitter.com/WRBvoTS83K

— SNY Mets (@SNY_Mets) July 19, 2026

He is also under contract until after the 2027 season. Whichever team may land him would have him under control for at least another season after this one. He may also be under contract even through the 2028 season, as he has a club option in his current contract. Robert can be a very under-the-radar piece that the Mets should look to move on from come the deadline.

Why the Mets Trading Robert Makes Sense

The Mets trading away Luis Robert Jr. would be a win-win situation for everyone involved. Robert can go to a potential contender and get more playing time than he would here with the emergence of Benge and Ewing. Another reason is the package the Mets could get back if they were to trade him away. Maybe they can get a few solid prospects in return, or another bat under team control, as they are currently looking for.

With how this season is unfolding and the team ready to move on from these guys, it only makes all the sense in the world for the Mets to move on from Robert. Let’s see what David Stearns decides to do and if he will pull the trigger on a potential Robert trade to a contender, and what the possible return would end up being if a trade is finalized.

Main Photo Credit: Vincent Carchietta-Imagn Images

The New York Mets acquired Luis Robert Jr. during this past offseason from the Chicago White Sox in exchange for Luisangel Acuña.
