The pitching has been stellar, the offense has turned around, and the team\u2019s looking up as they just got back to a .500 record on Friday night. But the Trade Deadline is quickly approaching. Despite the logical thought process being not to ruin a good thing when it\u2019s going, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.boston.com\/sports\/boston-red-sox\/2026\/07\/17\/red-sox-2026-trade-deadline-report\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to ESPN\u2019s Jeff Passan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, General Manager Craig Breslow and the front office aren\u2019t ruling out a fire sale just yet.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, as previously said, it would be quite weird to lean into selling in a down year for the American League, especially when the team is on the brink of making the playoffs right now. They should be doing the opposite. But with the deadline around the corner, let\u2019s look at the trade candidates (based on <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/story\/_\/id\/49082474\/ranking-mlb-trade-deadline-candidates-top-100-skubal-chapman-peralta-arraez\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN\u2019s Top 100 list<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) and speculate on the likelihood of them being traded.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Writer\u2019s Note: Two noteworthy pieces of information here.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/couloda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Danny Coulombe <\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(originally 95th) had been DFAd on July 12th and therefore is not eligible on the list now that he\u2019s a free agent.<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All statistics provided are as of Friday, July 17th.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Chances of Red Sox Players Being Traded<\/h2>\n<h2><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/chapmar01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Aroldis Chapman<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #10<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: 20 Saves, 2.12 ERA, 38\/12 K\/BB (3.2 Ratio)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reigning AL Reliever of the Year is the hottest Red Sox asset on the market right now, and for good reason. If a contender needs a high-end reliever\/closer, Chapman is exactly the type of guy needed. While the reliever is in his age-38 season, he is still one of the best closers in the league, in the last year of his contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBrrMkhTSx\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 4681px; aspect-ratio: 4681\/3121;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being the exact type of reliever to push a team into contention, the assumption is the Red Sox would need a lot in return, and it\u2019s uncertain if they would get a lot for a two-month rental. The Red Sox may also believe they are that team and might keep him. It\u2019s uncertain right now.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Probability: 25%<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>Sonny Gray\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #11<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: 11-1 Record, 2.54 ERA, 85\/24 K\/BB (3.5 Ratio)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Red Sox found a hidden gem this season when they traded for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. That might be a bit of an obvious point for a former Cy Young candidate, but in his age-36 season, it\u2019s fair to assume that no one expected this type of season out of him. He\u2019s become one of MLB\u2019s premier pitchers this season and one of the most valuable assets on the trade market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBPV1K3fuU\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3537px; aspect-ratio: 3537\/5305;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There have been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/23\/red-sox-trade-rumors-what-a-sonny-gray-move-could-look-like\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">talks about trading him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> just to get something of great value back. He\u2019s in the last year of his contract with team control, with a mutual option for the 2027 season. Ideally, it would be to a contender so it\u2019s beneficial for both sides of the deal, but the Red Sox may have some reservations. Gray\u2019s currently) They&#8217;re the only right-handed pitcher in the rotation right now, so removing him from the equation isn\u2019t exactly ideal. Still, the thought process of getting something for him rather than nothing may be intriguing to the front office.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Probability: 35-40%\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Willson Contreras\u00a0<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #12<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: .285 BA\/.378 OBP\/.547 SLG, 21 HR\u2019s, 62 RBIs<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contreras was also a player<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/12\/21\/cardinals-trade-wilson-contreras-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> coming over from the Cardinals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> this offseason. Unlike Gray, however, he is under team control for two more seasons after this (2028 team option). He is having a career year this season with the Red Sox, with his 21 home runs being only three shy of his career high in a season, with 66 games remaining. Of course, when they were struggling, Contreras would have certainly been an option on the market, as yet again, a contender needing a bat could\u2019ve used him.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9\" image-id=\"fwuQfQ6QDMl9\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2700px; aspect-ratio: 2700\/3900;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But things are different now. Contreras has been a huge part of the offense\u2019s turnaround during this hot streak. Also, news came out over the All-Star Break that he is unwilling to waive his no-trade clause for at least this season and wants to continue in 2026 with the Red Sox. So that should solve that problem there.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Willson Contreras says he went to the Red Sox and told them he would not be willing to waive his no-trade clause. He wants to finish his career in Boston. A team needing a set-up man would be great for Whitlock. If he is traded, Whitlock might not be, and vice versa. However, and this can\u2019t be stressed enough, if they are remotely in contention for a playoff spot or higher by the deadline, they<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should not move them <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unless the promise of someone who can help this season <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the future comes back in return.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Probability: 15%<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/duranja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Jarren Duran<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #42<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: .193 BA\/.256 OBP\/.346 SLG, 13 HR\u2019s, 48 RBI\u2019s<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/11\/could-this-former-mvp-candidate-bounce-back-in-2026\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">former MVP candidate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 2024 season has slowly declined and is struggling this year. Of course, the main question is: where does he stand with this team? Sure, former number one prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is probably the future in left field. But with no sign of when Anthony will return from <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/07\/roman-anthony-injured-wrist-mickey-gasper-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it\u2019s unsure of who will take over in left. The bat of Duran could most likely be replaced with <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yoshima02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Masataka Yoshida<\/a>, with his bat improving recently. But until then, it\u2019s a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/07\/red-sox-jarren-duran\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> bit questionable what to do with him<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Despite the bad batting average, he is second on the team in terms of RBIs, behind Contreras\u2019s 62. But if they were to trade a position player at the deadline, he seems like the most likely.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Probability: 65%<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kineris01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Isiah Kiner-Falefa<\/b><\/a><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #63\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: .277 BA\/.344 OBP\/.361 SLG, two HR\u2019s, 13 RBI\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kiner-Falefa is just one of several utility infielders on the Red Sox roster right now, but he\u2019s a rental with World Series experience. That\u2019s the kind of guy a contender wants in the locker room. It could be understandable, and Boston doesn\u2019t really have a place for him when he comes back from injury, due to the rise of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/seiglan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anthony Seigler<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, among other infielders. So while it\u2019s unknown if anyone\u2019s deeply interested, he would seem like the easiest asset to move off of.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Possibility: 50%<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandopa02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><b>Patrick Sandoval<\/b><\/a><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #83\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: 0-0 record, 2.08 ERA, five K\u2019s in one start in 2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sandoval has been absent with injuries for most of his Red Sox tenure, but is finally back (set to start again on Saturday). He\u2019s more of a depth rotation piece to be perfectly honest, but he has shown through his rehab and his single start this season that he could provide some value to a team, having a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/10\/patrick-sandoval-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">short but solid outing against the White Sox<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And seeing as the Red Sox have too many left-handers currently, he might be another name that gets flipped pretty easily.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Probability: 60-65%<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Masataka Yoshida<\/b><b>\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ESPN Rank: #98<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Stats: .269 BA\/.344 OBP\/.403 SLG, Four HR\u2019s, 17 RBI\u2019s\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the outfielders, as mentioned with Duran, it comes down to these two in terms of who will probably stay. In the past, despite being an above-league-average hitter, the Red Sox have deemed his contract hard to move. That might lean them towards keeping him over Duran this season if they have to choose, despite maybe being easier to move than before.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Trade Probability: 30-35%\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trade Deadline season is approaching fast, and it will be interesting to see what the Red Sox do.
