Just like several teams, the Phillies badly need some extra power to help them in the playoffs. To make matters worse, one of their closers, Brad Keller, is out for the rest of the season.

The Phillies have plenty to deal with. They are still only second in the Wild Card standings behind the Chicago Cubs. With their current roster, making it to the World Series seems far-fetched. Adding another starting pitcher is the team’s top priority. However, they also need another veteran slugger to help them.

Phillies Rumors Point to Matt Chapman as Possible Trade Target

The latest Phillies rumors are linked to veteran slugger Matt Chapman. MLB insider Robert Murray mentioned that Chapman would be a great long-term option in Philadelphia.

“Matt Chapman… I think he’d be a great fit for Philadelphia.” “Especially if they want to upgrade the third base position and have someone there long-term,” Murray said.

The Giants have a number of players who could be moved as the deadline approaches such as Luis Arraez or even Jung Hoo Lee pic.twitter.com/zx58PeFv5a

— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) July 16, 2026

Current third baseman Alec Bohm is heading towards unrestricted free agency after this season. Bohm has long been rumored to be parting ways with the Phillies. His numbers are low after slashing just .213 with 11 home runs this season. It’s also worth noting that Bohm is represented by Scott Boras, one of the most powerful sports agents.

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="a61405551f80e72f675225f083759bb9" image-id="fwuQ6Y6k7aeE" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2238px; aspect-ratio: 2238/1590;" ></smartframe-embed>

The chances of Bohm hitting the free agent market are pretty high. Instead of the Phillies letting him walk, they might still consider a trade. As Murray says, Chapman might be a great fit as a long-term player. However, the biggest question is whether the Giants are ready to trade Chapman.

Matt Chapman’s Contract Could Complicate Things for the Phillies

Chapman’s contract seems to be the biggest issue. He has a full no-trade clause that runs through the 2030 season. The Giants signed the veteran slugger to a six-year, $151 million contract with no deferred money. The Phillies might not be ready to take a huge load for a player like Chapman.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" src="https://lastwordonsports.com/baseball/wp-content/uploads/sites/7/2026/07/USATSI_29257015.webp" alt="San Francisco Giants Matt Chapman pictured during an at-bat vs the Athletics. Boras also mentioned that there’s no intention of trading Chapman at the moment. If the Giants decide to part ways with Chapman, they will expect something huge in return. Yet, Boras could make things happen, especially since he’s the agent for both Bohm and Chapman.

The Phillies could turn the other way, considering Champan’s current situation. His numbers are low, and he is currently injured with a strained lower abdominal muscle. Chapman’s batting average is slightly better than Bohm’s at .235. He has seven home runs and 42 RBIs throughout this season.

The Giants are “hopeful” of trading Matt Chapman this deadline, along with Robbie Ray and Luis Arraez, per @BNightengale. pic.twitter.com/HRElFff1x5

— Foul Territory (@FoulTerritoryTV) June 21, 2026

The Giants will try to find a way to dump salary. Chapman will be the perfect candidate to open the doors for other prospects. On the other hand, the Phillies will need to take a huge load of Chapman’s salary. A long-term deal would benefit the team, but they have other pressing issues to deal with.

Apart from Chapman, the Giants could also look at moving Luis Arraez or Jung Hoo Lee. The Giants are a lost cause after struggling to win. The playoffs are way out of reach under the leadership of Tony Vitello. The only thing they could do is hope for a better season next year by making significant changes to their roster. That said, they have a chance of moving Chapman, but as Murray says, it’s hard to see Chapman going to Philadelphia.

The Phillies rumors continue to swirl around several other players, including Michael Wacha.

Main Photo Credit: Mark J.
