First, there was the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/02\/willson-contreras-nate-eaton-suspensions-from-tuesdays-fight-details-impact\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fight with the Washington Nationals<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that got him a seven game suspension initially (since he appealed, it\u2019s been reduced to five games now). Then, he got <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/07\/willson-contreras-named-as-all-star-reserve-1st-half-recap\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">named an All-Star reserve<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> after initially <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/05\/biggest-all-star-snubs\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being snubbed from the team<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He also got hurt the other day with a foot contusion. But there was another notable event that happened; Contreras was invited to participate in the Home Run Derby, alongside players such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/harpebr03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bryce Harper<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/caminju01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Junior Caminero<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. While he is the first player from Boston to participate in 15 years, he\u2019s far from the first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Willson Contreras has announced on his instagram that he will participate in the T-Mobile Home Run Derby! <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/WMnR22lSot\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/WMnR22lSot<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Talkin&#8217; Baseball (@TalkinBaseball_) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/TalkinBaseball_\/status\/2074943263186841846?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">July 8, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h2>Red Sox in the Home Run Derby<\/h2>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBlEhe7DB1\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3000px; aspect-ratio: 3000\/2087;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h3><b>Jim Rice (1985 Home Run Derby)<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prior to 1991, it was a way different format then it is currently. The main idea still stood; an out was a ball that didn\u2019t go over the fence. But it was a two inning format, five outs for a batter meant the end of their inning. Also, while there could be a player that hits more home runs than everyone else, players were organized by leagues as opposed to who hit the most home runs in the first half.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/riceji01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jim Rice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had participated in the first ever Home Run Derby, having 15 homers in the first half. He hit on a team including fellow hall of farmers <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/f\/fiskca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carlton Fisk<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ripkeca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Cal Ripken Jr.<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, helping the AL win 17-16. Despite hitting four homers, he did not have the high, losing out to <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/parkeda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dave Parker<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (six) in that regard.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Mo Vaughn (1995 Home Run Derby)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1995, the format had expanded to a three round format, with the two best hitters facing off in the finals, regardless of league. Boston slugger and former MVP <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/vaughmo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mo Vaughn<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would participate in the \u201895 contest, but would fall short of the final with 6 home runs (<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/thomafr04.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Frank Thomas<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> would win with 15, despite <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/belleal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Albert Belle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> having 16).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mo Vaughn would have one great year overall in 1995, hitting .300 on the nose with 39 home runs and 126 RBIs. These statistics would help him cruise on his way towards the American League MVP. Like Vaughn in the Derby, the \u201895 Red Sox fell short in the playoff run, losing in the ALDS. But it was an eventful year for the slugger at first.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Nomar Garciaparra (1997, 1999 Home Run Derby)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Seen as one of the best hitters in Red Sox history (and one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2019\/07\/16\/the-golden-age-of-shortstop\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">best shortstops at the turn of the century<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">), <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garcino01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nomar Garciaparra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also had his hand in the All-Star event. \u201897 was a disappointment, hitting zero homers for a rookie who would finish with 30 en route to winning Rookie of the Year. 1999 was slightly a different story. Although he wasn\u2019t able to keep up with sluggers such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mcgwima01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mark McGwire<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/griffke02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ken Griffey Jr<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">., Garciaparra was selected to do this event in his home stadium.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 1999 All-Star Game was a spectacle at Fenway all around for multiple reasons, whether it was <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/martipe02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pedro Martinez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2019s <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballhall.org\/discover\/inside-pitch\/martinez-fans-five-at-all-star-game\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">performance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/willite01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ted Williams<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being present. But the Home Run Derby, although not going the home player\u2019s way, was also a moment. Fenway Park has yet to get another All-Star host bid since, but that \u201899 weekend was special.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Carl Everett (2000 Home Run Derby)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The year after, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/evereca01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carl Everett<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made his first appearance at All-Star Weekend, hitting 22 of his career high 34 home runs in the first half of the season. He showed up to Turner Field not only for the game itself, but also the Derby. He hit 12 home runs total in the derby, finishing in third place as he lost in the semifinals 11-6 to the eventual champion in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sosasa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sammy Sosa<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everett was not around Boston for long, playing for the team from 2000-2002 before being traded to the Texas Rangers. The outfielder had his ups and downs with this team, as his highlight in Boston was <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sabr.org\/gamesproj\/game\/september-2-2001-a-near-perfect-storm-for-yankees-mike-mussina\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breaking up a perfect game<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> against <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mussimi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mike Mussina<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but then later that month, he was suspended for showing up late to a workout. As mentioned, Boston would eventually move on from him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>David Ortiz (Five-Time Participant, One-Time Winner)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franchise legend <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/ortizda01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">David Ortiz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, also known as \u201cBig Papi\u201d was a mainstay in the Derby for the mid 2000\u2019s and very early 2010\u2019s. He made his first appearance in 2004, where he hit three and was eliminated in the first round. In \u201805 and \u201806 he finished as a semi-finalist. But 2010 was the year he broke through, winning the Derby with 32 homers. He ended up beating future teammate <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ramirha01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hanley Ramirez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The win for Ortiz also meant the first time in franchise history that a Red Sox player had won the derby. The slugger would go at it again in 2011, once again finishing as a semi-finalist. But the crazy thing about that year was that he wasn\u2019t the only Red Sox player to enter, and his teammate did better.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Adrian Gonzalez (2011 Home Run Derby)\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/gonzaad01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adrian Gonzalez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, in his short lived tenure in Boston, did manage to make a derby appearance alongside Ortiz. Although not his first time in the derby, it was his first as a member of Boston. Mandatory Credit: Scott Rovak-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first baseman would barely miss out on the franchise\u2019s second straight Home Run Derby\u00a0 champion, hitting 31 homers to Cano\u2019s 32. Regardless, it was a great run for Ortiz and Gonzalez both that year.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Last Word\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contreras is slated to go on Monday night. With his injury listed as day-to-day, and his suspension keeping him out for the weekend series against the Mets, there should be plenty of rest time. The field for Monday is pretty stacked, but Contreras has a decent chance. He hit 20 home runs in the first half, just four shy of his career high in a season. This is definitely a career year for him and he seems poised for a successful second half.
