{"id":125212,"date":"2026-07-05T21:35:34","date_gmt":"2026-07-06T01:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=125212"},"modified":"2026-07-05T21:36:28","modified_gmt":"2026-07-06T01:36:28","slug":"adley-rutschman-in-asg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/05\/adley-rutschman-in-asg\/","title":{"rendered":"Adley Rutschman Is Back on the Big Stage"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/rutscad01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adley Rutschman<\/a> first debuted on May 21, 2022, it was the most important stepping stone toward turning the Baltimore Orioles back into a contender, as well as giving the fans some excitement about the youth movement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBcu8hapF8\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2800px; aspect-ratio: 2800\/3500;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Adley Rutschman Is Back on the Big Stage<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In his first full campaign in 2023, Rutschman made an immediate impact, hitting a career-high 20 home runs to go along with 80 RBIs, while batting .277 with an OPS over .800, and secured his first trip to the All-Star Game. Mandatory Credit: Stephen Brashear-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After an inconsistent and injury-riddled 2025, Rutschman was primed for a bounce-back after a full offseason of getting himself back into full baseball form.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Wasting No Time<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The former Oregon State Beaver wanted to prove he is one of the game\u2019s best and an elite option at catcher. After a strong first few games in March, Rutschman took off in April, posting a .378\/.404\/.711 slashline, driving in 16 runs in addition to four homers, good for an OPS of 1.115.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over 40% of his base hits were going for extra bags, a bonus to the already patient approach Rutschman incorporates at the plate.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Bump in the Ride<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, the injury bug struck Rutschman for the first time in mid-April, causing him to miss a little over a week and interrupting his overall rhythm and flow. Mandatory Credit: Jamie Sabau-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He is also getting back to the player that made him so appealing out of college, doing damage to the fastball, while fighting off or serving the offspeed the other way for a base hit.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rutschman is <a  href=\"https:\/\/baseballsavant.mlb.com\/savant-player\/adley-rutschman-668939?stats=statcast-r-hitting-mlb\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">slugging<\/a> .514 on fastballs, with 18 of his 27 extra base hits coming off of the fastball. Meanwhile his batting average has been slightly higher on breaking pitches, something most players cannot attest to.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The defense has been stellar as usual, as Rutschman ranks in the 99th percentile in fielding run value, accumulating nine defensive runs saved and we haven\u2019t even hit the All-Star break yet.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>What Does the Future Look Like?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While Rutschman\u2019s name certainly hasn\u2019t been <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/11\/adley-rutschman-trade\/\" target=\"_self\">trade deadline<\/a> free, the hope this man has brought to a franchise that really needed it should keep him with the team post August 3.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, the fact that the Orioles have the best catching duo in the sport might suggest a future could be elsewhere for number 35, as the Orioles have bigger needs they must address, and using Rutschman as a trade piece might help them fill these voids.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Main Photo Credit: Katie Stratman-Imagn Images<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>When Adley Rutschman first debuted on May 21, 2022, it was the most important stepping stone toward turning the Baltimore Orioles back into a contender, as well as giving the fans some excitement about the youth movement.
