They have plenty of key assets on the big league roster that could net big returns, but after taking a similar approach in recent seasons, it’s unclear how aggressive they’ll be this summer given the recent changes to their front office. However, this deadline needs to be different from others, as star southpaw Reid Detmers is gaining value that Los Angeles would be foolish to ignore.

The Angels remain several pieces away from legitimate contention. While the Angels have struggled to develop consistent pitching for years, they now possess one of the deadline’s most valuable trade chips. Selling high on Detmers could accelerate a rebuild while his value may never be higher.

This is why the Angels must capitalize on Reid Detmers’ trade value

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBPqJSOYUH" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3829px; aspect-ratio: 3829/2553;" ></smartframe-embed>

There are a handful of areas that are making Detmers a hot commodity on the trade market. The most obvious is his success in 2026. Detmers has posted an ERA of 3.88 (xERA 3.03) with a 2.96 FIP, 10.11 K/9, and 1.06 WHIP across 17 starts. His numbers have been excellent, and underlying metrics make him more appealing for contenders searching for pitching help.

In addition to his success, he won’t be a free agent until after the 2028 season. Detmers remains under club control through 2028 and has pitched like a top-of-the-rotation arm. That isn’t the only reason his value has soared. While he was already an expensive pitcher for a team to acquire, there are two critical injuries that have skyrocketed his value.

Supply and Demand favors the Angels

<smartframe-embed class="smartframe_wp_element" customer-id="b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf" image-id="WmOBESskTjrV" style="width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072/2190;" ></smartframe-embed>

Two critical injury developments broke through this week. Royals’ starter Kris Bubic was scratched from his rehab outing with shoulder soreness and received a cortisone injection a day after. He’ll be shut down for 7-10 days, per Anne Rogers, so there currently is no timeline on his return. Bubic will be a free agent after this year, taking away a key left-handed pitching rental off the market.

On top of that, the Yankees are looking like a big-time contender this summer, but they just lost Carlos Rodon to the injured list with elbow inflammation. There’s no timeline there, so New York will likely be after another starting pitcher.

Trade markets are driven by supply and demand. Bubic’s injury removed one of the top available left-handed starters from the market, while Rodon’s injury potentially created another aggressive buyer.

Other teams that may target Detmers

Both Chicago clubs are looking like other suitors for Detmers. The Cubs have dealt with the injury bug themselves, but their wounded pitching staff has battled. They made their first acquisition a few days ago by bringing in David Peterson from the New York Mets, but that’s not enough and should add more reinforcements to that unit. The Cubs usually aren’t afraid to make big-time deals like this either. In fact, they were listed as a possibility for Tarik Skubal. So they are definitely a team to watch out for in this market.

The other team from Chicago, the White Sox, just needs to add a frontline starter to their squad. If they added a guy like Detmers, then their postseason chances will dramatically increase. Their division is already weak, and with their very strong offense, a big-time addition like Detmers could change everything for them.

All of these factors are making it a no-brainer decision to shop Detmers this summer. Dealing him would dramatically boost this farm system, bringing in key pieces towards the future. The value with Detmers through results, control, and a suddenly thin trade market is giving the Angels an opportunity they must not pass up.

Main Image Credit: William Liang-Imagn Images

The highly anticipated MLB trade deadline is right around the corner, and the Los Angeles Angels are looking like a team that could accelerate their rebuild.
