{"id":125106,"date":"2026-07-03T13:00:54","date_gmt":"2026-07-03T17:00:54","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=125106"},"modified":"2026-07-03T13:01:00","modified_gmt":"2026-07-03T17:01:00","slug":"updates-red-sox-injuries","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/03\/updates-red-sox-injuries\/","title":{"rendered":"Updates on Red Sox Pitching Injuries: Crochet, Oviedo and More"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Boston Red Sox this season have had their fair share of injuries throughout the season, whether it\u2019s the recent one that <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suffered or the one that\u2019s kept <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/a\/anthoro01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Roman Anthony<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/07\/roman-anthony-injured-wrist-mickey-gasper-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">out for a concerning amount of time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But there have been a lot of pitchers who have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/10\/red-sox-rotation-depth-where-will-these-three-starters-end-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">been injured for a while<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether they\u2019ve been injured this season or, in one particular case, have yet to make their debut in a Red Sox uniform. Here are updates on the following pitchers:<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Garrett Crochet<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crochga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Crochet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> started the 2026 season as Boston\u2019s ace, as well as one of the best pitchers in all of baseball. However, after a troubling start against the Minnesota Twins, there were some concerns about him. A little over two weeks later, on April 29th, he would <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/29\/red-sox-roster-moves-garrett-crochet-injury-nate-eaton-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">go on the 15-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, the Red Sox rotation has surprisingly flourished. But an arm like Crochet\u2019s is severely missed. In terms of him, though, there is no set return date. In early June, it was revealed that during the recovery process, he had acquired a left lat strain to add to the existing injury. He was subsequently shut down for two weeks and transferred to the 60-day IL.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBLkeXgPxV\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3072px; aspect-ratio: 3072\/2048;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the most <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/sports.yahoo.com\/articles\/red-sox-sp-garrett-crochet-203330490.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent update last week<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he was said to have been working on getting back. This past Saturday, he was said to be working with plyometric balls (heavier than a baseball by about two ounces), and while not having a solidified date to come back, he does have a couple of dates in his mind that he\u2019d like to go, but did not reveal them.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While, as mentioned, the starting rotation is far from the reason that the Sox are struggling, getting a guy back that finished runner-up in Cy Young last year to bolster the pitching depth would be nice. Ideally, right after the All-Star break is when the expected return for Crochet should be, although an exact date is unknown.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Johan Oviedo\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/oviedjo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Johan Oviedo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/12\/04\/red-sox-acquire-johan-oviedo-pirates-acquire-garcia\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquired<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Red Sox this past offseason in exchange for <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/garcijh01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jhostynxon Garcia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He was slated to be part of the starting rotation until Early was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/03\/23\/connelly-early-makes-red-sox-opening-day-roster\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last minute and took the spot. From there, he was seen as a middle reliever. However, just before the Red Sox&#8217;s home opener against the San Diego Padres, it was <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/03\/red-sox-roster-moves-before-home-opener\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">revealed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that Oviedo had a right elbow strain and would be placed on the IL. Oviedo had been through injuries the past couple of years, with Tommy John surgery in \u201824 and a lat issue in \u201825.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s currently also on the 60-day IL with a flexor strain. However, he seems to be throwing now, well past the six-week timeline the Red Sox initially thought it would take. The last real update heard was that he was sent down to Florida for rehab, along with fellow pitchers <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/houckta01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tanner Houck<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crawfku01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kutter Crawford<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But that was on June 12th. That expectation was that he\u2019d be back by the end of June.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\"><p>&nbsp;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">The Red Sox sent Johan Oviedo, Tanner Houck, and Kutter Crawford to Florida to continue their rehabs. That opened up some much-needed locker space in a crowded Fenway home clubhouse.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Tim Healey (@timbhealey) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/timbhealey\/status\/2065560088903840148?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 12, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He seems to be one of the more forgotten players to the average fan because there are no real updates on him. They\u2019re sure to come at some point, as the guess is he\u2019s either started or getting close to starting a full rehab. But unless he gets traded soon, the real injury update timeline is unknown, although the expectation is no earlier than August, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/redsox\/news\/red-sox-injuries-and-roster-moves?os=roku...&amp;ref=app\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">per MLB<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Patrick Sandoval<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/sandopa02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patrick Sandoval<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has been one of the more unique cases. He signed with the Red Sox in December of 2024, but had torn his UCL during the 2024 season with the Los Angeles Angels. He missed the entire 2025 season recovering from surgery and has yet to make his Red Sox debut in 2026. However, he does seem to be rehabbing, and his time may be coming soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the injuries to the pitching staff going on, Sandoval\u2019s name has been one to keep an eye on, especially with the successful rehabs. His name has gained more traction now with the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/01\/red-soxs-connelly-early-to-15-day-injured-list-jovani-moran-back-with-boston\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injury to Early on Tuesday night<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/07\/with-connelly-early-hurt-leftys-red-sox-debut-in-play-after-2-year-absence.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">possible replacement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (subscription required) during this time up until the break. He\u2019s nearing the end of his rehab stint (maximum 30 days, starting June 5th), so a decision on him should be coming real soon.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">His last Major League start was on June 21st, 2024, when still with the Angels. Luckily for the Red Sox, he starts on Saturday, July 4th, in Portland. That final start should give them a good gauge on whether to bring him up or not. Hopefully they do, as they need to get some worth out of the two-year, $18.5 million contract. Whether that means keeping him in the bullpen after Early comes back or shipping him off.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Tanner Houck\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Houck has been an interesting name in the eyes of Red Sox Nation. In 2024, he was one of two Red Sox players to be named to the American League All-Star team, going 8-6 in the first half. Additionally, in the first half, he also threw a three-hit complete-game shutout against the Cleveland Guardians. But since then, he\u2019s gone downhill. Mandatory Credit: Brian Fluharty-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He started 0-3 with an ERA of 8.04, also <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">earning a place in MLB history<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that no pitcher ever wants to be. He became the first pitcher ever to have two starts in the same season where he allowed 11+ runs in three or fewer innings. After the second start, he was placed on the IL with a flexor strain.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since then, he\u2019s had a tough road back, eventually going through Tommy John surgery and what they called a \u201c<\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/baseball\/news\/red-soxs-tanner-houck-undergoes-hybrid-ucl-repair\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hybrid reconstruction of his right UCL<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. He\u2019s currently on the 60-day IL and, like Oviedo, went down to Florida in mid-June. According to the injury report, he started \u201clight\u201d mound work a little over a week ago at this point and is aiming for late \u201826, perhaps a September timeline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>Kutter Crawford<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawford had essentially been shut down for the entire 2025 season, having knee soreness prior to the beginning of the season, then also getting a wrist injury while rehabbing, which caused former manager <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/managers\/coraal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Cora<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to shut him down for the rest of \u201825. And now he can\u2019t catch a break. Forearm tightness <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.cbssports.com\/fantasy\/baseball\/news\/red-soxs-kutter-crawford-managing-forearm-tightness\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moved his recovery back a bit, <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">but he was rumored to be throwing plyos at the end of June in Florida.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBvoBB9P1D\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 2149px; aspect-ratio: 2149\/1433;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crawford\u2019s been a tricky name to figure out. Obviously, with how the rotation is and given that he hasn\u2019t started his rehab stints yet, there\u2019s no chance he cracks the rotation this year as he did in \u201824. But in 2024, he started 33 games, lost 16, and gave up 34 homers (all of which led the majors). His last relief appearance was on May 31st, 2023, in which he gave up one run and walked two batters in two-thirds of an inning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s a little inconsistent, and with how the bullpen seems to be struggling right now, unless the towel\u2019s been thrown in on the season already, that\u2019s not exactly a chance one wants the manager to take currently. They\u2019d have to see how his rehab goes before ultimately making a decision on him.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As seen, there are plenty of pitchers on the injured list currently, and most of them don\u2019t really have an exact timeline for their returns. The pitching depth that was there at the beginning is seeming to run thin, and for a team that\u2019s going back and forth on the edge of competing and selling, that\u2019s not an ideal place to be. It\u2019s still somewhat early, so things could shape out right, especially if they take advantage of the stretch right after the All-Star break.
