{"id":125010,"date":"2026-07-04T12:39:41","date_gmt":"2026-07-04T16:39:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/?p=125010"},"modified":"2026-07-04T12:39:41","modified_gmt":"2026-07-04T16:39:41","slug":"undervalued-blue-jays","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/07\/04\/undervalued-blue-jays\/","title":{"rendered":"The Undervalued Blue Jays Making the Biggest Impact"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-start=\"129\" data-end=\"385\" class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\">During a recent Toronto Blue Jays broadcast,<a  href=\"https:\/\/www.sportsnet.ca\/baseball\/mlb\/teams\/toronto-blue-jays\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> Sportsnet<\/a>\u2019s <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/siddajo01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Joe Siddall<\/a> described certain players\u2019 performances as \u201cunder-the-hood\u201d contributions\u2014a fitting way to describe some of the undervalued Blue Jays who have been making a significant impact this season.<span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchor\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"387\" data-end=\"932\">When looking back at some of the best Blue Jays rosters of the past decade, Toronto\u2019s 2015 and 2016 teams come to mind, making deep playoff runs before ultimately falling in the American League Championship Series. Yes, these teams were carried by the likes of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/donaljo02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Josh Donaldson<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bautijo02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Jose Bautista<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/encared01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Edwin Encarnaci\u00f3n<\/a>. But if it were not for the contributions of players such as <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/reverbe01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ben Revere<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/carreez01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ezequiel Carrera<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/goinsry01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ryan Goins<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/cecilbr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brett Cecil<\/a>, to name a few. You would not be far-fetched to wonder whether these teams would have made deep playoff runs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBSKhoVhll\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3568px; aspect-ratio: 3568\/2324;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"934\" data-end=\"1154\">The Blue Jays\u2019 playoff push last year was much the same. <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/clemeer01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ernie Clement<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lukesna01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathan Lukes<\/a>, and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yesavtr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Trey Yesavage<\/a> all came out of the woodwork and played a level of baseball that Toronto probably would not have gone as far without.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1291\">It is fair to say that the same energy has bled into this season, with several of the quieter names on the roster making a loud impact.<\/p>\n<h2 data-start=\"1156\" data-end=\"1291\">Undervalued Blue Jays<\/h2>\n<h3>The Blue Jays&#8217; Unsung Outfielders<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"103\" data-end=\"423\" class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\">It was only a couple of weeks ago when <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strawmy01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myles Straw<\/a> put together a 14-pitch at-bat in Boston against <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Payton Tolle<\/a>\u2014the longest of any Blue Jay all season. <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/l\/lukesna01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nathan Lukes<\/a> did much the same on Canada Day, leading the game with a nine-pitch battle against the Mets&#8217; <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/peralfr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Freddy Peralta,<\/a> which led to him being pulled in the fourth inning with a pitch count of 91.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"425\" data-end=\"530\">Both Lukes and Straw have a knack for wearing down pitching, setting the tone for the rest of the lineup.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\"><a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/springe01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">George Springer<\/a> on <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/strawmy01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Myles Straw<\/a>&#8216;s 14-pitch at-bat earlier in the <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/hashtag\/BlueJays?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">#BlueJays<\/a>&#8216; win:<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That fired up the dugout and got everybody going. He\u2019s playing for the name on the front, not the name on the back.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Keegan Matheson (@KeeganMatheson) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/KeeganMatheson\/status\/2067070342749618277?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 17, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"1160\">While quality at-bats do not necessarily appear in the box score, they represent the kind of \u201cunder-the-hood\u201d value that directly impacts the game\u2014and these two provide it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"783\" data-end=\"1160\" class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\">But for Lukes the numbers stand out as well. As it stands, he ranks fourth on the team in wins above replacement at 1.0, behind <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/o\/okamoka01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Kazuma Okamoto<\/a>, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valenbr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Valenzuela<\/a>, and Clement. Mandatory Credit: Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p data-start=\"1162\" data-end=\"1299\">In June alone, Lukes hit .292 with 26 hits, four home runs, eight RBI and 10 runs scored.\u00a0Lukes has emerged as one of the most undervalued Blue Jays, and at an average annual salary of $808,500, the club is getting a bargain.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1301\" data-end=\"1584\">Though they may not garner the same attention as outfield duos such as <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Aaron Judge<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bellico01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cody Bellinger<\/a>, or <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/p\/pagesan01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Andy Pages<\/a> and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/h\/hernate01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Teoscar Hern\u00e1ndez<\/a>, Straw and Lukes embody what it means to be team-first players and have become the faces of Toronto&#8217;s under-the-hood contributors\u2014two of the most undervalued Blue Jays on the roster.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"377\" data-end=\"648\">The Ninth Inning &#8220;Animal&#8221;<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"110\" data-end=\"345\">When \u201cAnimal I Have Become\u201d by Three Days Grace blasts through the Rogers Centre speakers and Blue Jays bullpen coach <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=johnso010gra&amp;utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Graham Johnson<\/a> delivers a two-handed slap to the back of <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/varlalo01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Louis Varland<\/a>, Toronto fans know the game is all but over.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"347\" data-end=\"507\">You would be hard-pressed to find a trade that has paid off better for Toronto than the one that brought Varland in at the trade deadline just under a year ago.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"509\" data-end=\"977\">With an ERA below 1.00, a perfect 18-for-18 in save opportunities and an American League Reliever of the Month award already under his belt, Varland is quietly putting together a season worthy of what could be his first All-Star selection. The Blue Jays\u2019 closer\u2019s 2026 campaign so far can be measured against the upper echelon of Blue Jays relief seasons: <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ryanb.01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">B.J. Ryan<\/a> in 2006, <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/warddu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Duane Ward<\/a> in 1993 and <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/w\/warddu01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tom Henke<\/a> in 1991.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"979\" data-end=\"1298\">The closer role has long been considered one of the more undervalued roles on a big-league roster. This season, however, Toronto has rediscovered just how valuable a ninth-inning arm can be. Varland isn\u2019t merely closing out games\u2014he is putting together one of the best relief seasons Toronto has seen in quite some time.<\/p>\n<h3>The Rookie Stabilizer<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"118\" data-end=\"387\" class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\">You would not expect to see <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/v\/valenbr01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Brandon Valenzuela<\/a>\u2019s name among the Blue Jays\u2019 leaders in wins above replacement\u2014but that\u2019s exactly where he is. He trails only Okamoto on the team in WAR and is tied for second with Clement, both at 1.2.<span aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchor\"><\/span><\/p>\n<p data-start=\"389\" data-end=\"657\"><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/20\/blue-jays-brandon-valenzuela-offense\/#google_vignette\" target=\"_self\">His offensive output<\/a> has been solid, as he is slashing .240\/.420\/.747 with seven home runs and 19 RBI. He also ranks in the 100th percentile among MLB catchers in framing, according to Statcast, a skill that pays significant dividends in managing a pitching staff.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"659\" data-end=\"897\">Valenzuela has quietly carved out a place for himself among the list of undervalued Blue Jays. His numbers are not flashy but rather stable\u2014exactly what Toronto needed when he stepped in to fill the void left by <a  target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/k\/kirkal01.shtml?utm_medium=linker&amp;utm_source=lastwordonsports.com&amp;utm_campaign=2026-07-04_br\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Alejandro Kirk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"899\" data-end=\"1107\">Still, it is easy to get lost in the recent storylines surrounding this team. <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/20\/john-schneider-pinpoints-one-area-where-the-blue-jays-offense-needs-work\/\" target=\"_self\">What do they need to fix on offense?<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/13\/blue-jays-slugger-poised-for-offensive-breakthrough\/\" target=\"_self\">Will Guerrero Jr. snap out of his slump?<\/a> Will the starting rotation begin to work deeper into games?<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1109\" data-end=\"1491\">This group of undervalued Blue Jays may not get the spotlight it deserves, but it has certainly earned its flowers. The Jays have dug themselves into a hole in the division, but they remain just 2.5 games back of a Wild Card spot.
