On paper, despite star players <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/j\/judgeaa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aaron Judge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/stantmi03.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Giancarlo Stanton<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> being out for the series, this wasn\u2019t expected to be a close series. So it came as a surprise when the Red Sox walked it off in the tenth inning on Sunday to end up sweeping the Yankees in a four-game series. Sure, with home runs from <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/d\/durbica01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Caleb Durbin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/y\/yoshima02.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masataka Yoshida<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and more, the offense exceeded expectations against a team that was the best in the American League at one point. But it was the pitching rotation that was the clear standout.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>What Red Sox Rotation Dominance Means<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/img.mlbstatic.com\/mlb-images\/image\/upload\/t_2x1\/t_w1536\/mlb\/aets7mjopl6vrighhahq.jpg\" alt=\"Nick Pivetta earns win in relief as Red Sox beat A's\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going into this season, the Red Sox were hailed as having one of the best rotations not just in the American League but in all of baseball. With a reigning Cy Young candidate in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/crochga01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Garrett Crochet<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a solid veteran in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/g\/grayso01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sonny Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and a pair of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/17\/red-sox-aces-homegrown\/?__cf_chl_f_tk=vmlDkkW.V8uW3.jnQZFXkQUqXrd752ZGJV9O78V47vg-1782863268-1.0.1.1-i8NG1myvpWieteml3QfBeNgLSosD6RCTpVUWoiJj2bI\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">young homegrown pitchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this rotation would\u2019ve been one to watch throughout the season. But due to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/18\/the-issues-with-this-red-sox-offense-as-the-team-continues-to-struggle\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offense struggling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the team has fallen short of expectations. But this past weekend really showed the potential of this team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going up against a lineup that not only crushes home runs (122, first in MLB) but also moves well around the bases (fourth in walks, second in stolen bases) isn\u2019t an easy feat, especially for a team that was 12-25 at home before last Thursday. It also doesn\u2019t help that the starting rotation gets one of the worst run support groups in the league, ranking 28th as of June 30th. However, despite this, the starters dominated the Bronx Bombers, with pitching lines such as:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early: Six innings, two runs, 9\/1 K\/BB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tolle: Seven innings, one hit, 7\/2 K\/BB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/benneja01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jake Bennett<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: 6.1 innings, three hits, 3\/2 K\/BB<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gray: 7.1 innings, one hit, 9\/1 K\/BB<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If those lines weren\u2019t enough evidence, Tolle took a perfect game into the sixth inning on Friday and Gray took a no-hitter into the eighth in his outing. The rotation has been dominant for a while now, but since the Red Sox are winning, it\u2019s really time to highlight it, especially since the Yankees are one of the top teams in the league this season.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Best Rotation Even Without Crochet?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going into the season, this rotation was supposed to be led by Crochet. The ace left-hander had arrived in Boston in 2025,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0and his first season was a massive success. He went 18-5 with a 2.59 ERA and 255 strikeouts, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/11\/12\/mlb-announces-2025-cy-young-award-winners-skenes-skubal\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">finishing second in the AL Cy Young race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> behind <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/skubata01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tarik Skubal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Coming off that season, though, expectations went high for him. At the start of the season, he struggled for a couple of starts, then would later get <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/04\/29\/red-sox-roster-moves-garrett-crochet-injury-nate-eaton-call-up\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">injured at the end of April<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. He has yet to return from the IL.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this and a setback for Brayan Bello<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Red Sox rotation has still exceeded expectations given their standing on paper. With Gray, Tolle, Early, Bennett, and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/suarera01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ranger Suarez<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the Red Sox have a streak of 12 consecutive quality starts (at least six innings, three runs or fewer); this is one of the best stretches <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nesn.com\/boston-red-sox\/news\/historic-pitching-streak-fueling-red-soxs-remarkable-turnaround\/fa4ffecddb39b6d2a971a1ef#:~:text=It&#039;s%20been%20even%20better%20lately,had%2014%20in%20a%20row.\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in franchise history<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Red Sox record for quality starts in a row was set in 1988, with 14.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>What\u2019s Next for Boston?\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The question that is up in the air right now is: what does this mean? What\u2019s next for this Red Sox team? And honestly, it\u2019s still just a little too early to judge that. Not by much, but July is just around the corner. That\u2019s three whole months of baseball left. In a below-average American League this season (with only five of the 15 teams above .500 as of June 30th), the Red Sox are only four and a half games out of the wild card race.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With only one team above .500 between Boston and the All-Star Break (Chicago White Sox), it\u2019s set to be an easy road till the break. But if they can keep this up afterward, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/23\/red-sox-trade-rumors-what-a-sonny-gray-move-could-look-like\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trade rumors around Gray<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the whispers of an all-lefty rotation (as intriguing as it sounds) can stop.
