Being offered players such as <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/marteke01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ketel Marte<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/r\/ryanjo04.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Joe Ryan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, those deals were ultimately turned down by the opposing GMs. The most infamous part about the Marte trade came from an <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.bostonglobe.com\/2026\/02\/09\/sports\/red-sox-trade-rumors-infield\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alec Speier report<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Subscription Needed). The report claimed that the Red Sox offered one of <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/t\/tollepa01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Payton Tolle <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/e\/earlyco01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Connelly Early<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and now-top prospect <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/register\/player.fcgi?id=arias-008fra\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Franklin Arias<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in exchange for Marte. However, the Arizona Diamondbacks were more interested in a <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/m\/mayerma01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marcelo Mayer<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-centered package, which Boston turned down almost immediately.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"alignleft\" style=\"max-width: 1280px\"><smartframe-embed class=\"smartframe_wp_element\" customer-id=\"b0c95bc04383cef69c6b47df872135cf\" image-id=\"WmOBcu7r1w08\" style=\"width: 100%; display: inline-flex; max-width: 3599px; aspect-ratio: 3599\/5398;\" ><\/smartframe-embed><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Based on that report, it would seem that the Red Sox really coveted Mayer as a key part of their future. And to be clear, this isn\u2019t a statement saying he isn\u2019t; he still might very well be a part of it. But there have been talks in the organization and just signs throughout the season that may make it seem like the thought may be different.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Recent Talks About Mayer in the Organization<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Mayer discussion has escalated recently due to a slew of comments. <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.masslive.com\/redsox\/2026\/06\/state-of-the-sox-questions-remain-about-marcelo-mayer-but-option-to-minors-isnt-the-answer.html\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Per Sean McAdam<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Subscription Required), it was leaked that some within the organization are starting to doubt Mayer, citing mental toughness and lack of ambition during slumps as major issues in the player\u2019s mindset. When looking at his season, it doesn\u2019t seem entirely like he\u2019s struggling, as he\u2019s got roughly the same statistics or at least similar to last year. His Batting average is .220 currently compared to .228 last year. But his <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.espn.com\/mlb\/player\/splits\/_\/id\/4872648\/marcelo-mayer\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">splits<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are a bit troublesome. In the month of May, he played 26 games. His batting average over those games was a dismal .198.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">According to <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/Sean_McAdam?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">@Sean_McAdam<\/a>, some in the Red Sox organization question Marcelo Mayer\u2019s mental toughness, his tendency to withdraw during slumps, and his willingness to play through inevitable minor physical issues. <a  href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/lESzxLKkcq\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">pic.twitter.com\/lESzxLKkcq<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gordo (@BOSSportsGordo) <a  href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BOSSportsGordo\/status\/2070496086276309458?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">June 26, 2026<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.x.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now in his defense, Mayer\u2019s only played 111 games in his career (as of June 29th). So it\u2019s a little unfair to judge a guy going through the motions. But this guy was the fourth overall pick. He was seen as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2024\/07\/02\/red-sox-prospects-climb-mlb-pipeline-rankings\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> one of the top prospects<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the system. And speaking of his defense, it\u2019s understandable to be on his side due to them switching him all over the diamond when he came up as a shortstop. But once <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/s\/storytr01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trevor Story<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/24\/red-sox-injury-updates-estimated-returns-on-star-players\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">went down with an injury<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that chance to play his natural position was presented to him. And in 24 games over at short, he\u2019s got a -4 DRS at the position.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On one hand, it seems weird to talk down on a top prospect who has been thrown all over the infield whenever someone goes down with an injury, as it happened with <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/b\/bregmal01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alex Bregman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year. But on the other hand, in his career, he\u2019s been better at third and second than he has at the position he was drafted at. And aside from April (.262\/.324\/.377), his bat\u2019s been below average at best.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It should also be noted that the criticisms questioned his &#8220;willingness to play through inevitable minor physical issues&#8221;. Coincidentally, the same day that report came out, Mayer went on the 10-day IL with a bone stress reaction in his left forearm. It&#8217;s weird timing for that news to come out, and then he just happens to end up on the list.<\/p>\n<h2><b>Mayer Involved In Trade Rumors\u00a0<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There was a point, as mentioned, where the Diamondbacks wanted Mayer in exchange for Marte, a Silver Slugger-winning second baseman that the Red Sox were interested in. Mayer was MLB\u2019s 12th-ranked prospect going into 2025 and had averaged an RBI a game in Worcester in 2025. Mayer was really highly valued. Throwing him in on top of Early or Tolle looked ridiculous at the time. But for a Red Sox team struggling with power right now, a guy who\u2019s hit 25+ the past two seasons and who has 15 currently would be pretty good right now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He\u2019s also a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">slightly <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">better fielder overall than Mayer. Mayer\u2019s got four errors and a -2 DRS overall this season, whereas Marte has zero errors and 0 DRS, but an average fielder\u2019s better than a bad one. Again, Mayer gets a pass due to all of the switchups, but it\u2019s hard not to think about what could\u2019ve been if Mayer and Early went to Arizona for Marte.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Small Incident With Willson Contreras<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s no secret that for the most part this season, the Red Sox offense has been <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/05\/18\/the-issues-with-this-red-sox-offense-as-the-team-continues-to-struggle\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">struggling<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. And in early May, newer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2025\/12\/21\/cardinals-trade-wilson-contreras-red-sox\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acquisition<\/span><\/a> <a  href=\"https:\/\/www.baseball-reference.com\/players\/c\/contrwi01.shtml\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Willson Contreras<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had some choice words to say towards the younger guys, claiming that amid the struggles, you just have to be patient with the younger bats on the team.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayer then <\/span><a  href=\"https:\/\/heavy.com\/sports\/mlb\/boston-red-sox\/marcelo-meyer-willson-contreras-alex-cora-comments\/\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">responded,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> calling Contreras\u2019 claim \u201can excuse\u201d. To Mayer\u2019s point, everyone was struggling at that point. Not just the young guys. Contreras and Mayer emphasized a couple of days later that there was no bad blood between them, but with Contreras\u2019 words, mixed in with the recent leak about Mayer from McAdam, it\u2019s sort of thought-provoking on what the view is on Mayer throughout the organization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><b>The Last Word<\/b><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mayer has been a tricky name to discuss over the past couple of months, as he\u2019s been disappointing so far this season and considering what the team could\u2019ve gotten for him. So it\u2019s understandable to be a little frustrated with him. But with the recent report that came out, that can\u2019t be good for a 23-year-old that Boston thought highly of before this season. It\u2019s definitely been a weird season<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lastwordonsports.com\/baseball\/2026\/06\/19\/red-sox-big-three-prospects-overhyped-or-too-soon-to-judge\/\" target=\"_self\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> regarding the young players<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but bashing a guy saying he has no mental toughness, whether it\u2019s true or not, isn\u2019t going to make the situation better.
