No other team has lost more than 11 from such a position, with most teams averaging just seven. The Detroit Tigers’ bullpen struggles are made even more stark by the relatively good starting rotation. Even beyond Tarik Skubal, the Tigers have largely been able to rely on strong starting pitching when injuries haven’t kept arms on the shelf. Both Keider Montero and Casey Mize have put up 2+ WAR so far this season, while all of Skubal, Valdez, and Troy Melton sit between 1.3 and 1.5.

Deadline Plans

The Tigers are likely out of contention even now, with five weeks to go before the trade deadline. Aside from the offense, the Tigers bullpen has been the single biggest reason why the team went from American League hopefuls to vying for the title of worst record in baseball. The only reason the team hasn’t done what the San Francisco Giants have done and declared the shop open is the very fact that Detroit competes in the weaker AL.

Much like last season, when the bullpen remained a sore spot right until the final day of the season, it appears that it will again go unaddressed in 2026. With several players on expiring contracts, the Tigers should look to flip them in the coming weeks to replenish their organizational pitching depth chart. Skubal could net a king’s ransom, while Mize, Flaherty and Gleyber Torres could be useful pieces for a contending team.

Finally, neither Jansen nor Jahmai Jones has really found their stripes in Motown this season, so they could do with a change of scenery. Even if a deal can’t be reached with another team to move them, the Tigers could certainly go the DFA route and open up a couple of roster spots for younger players such as Max Clark and Max Anderson. Perhaps the team won’t end up moving all of those names, but it would be smart to listen to all offers.

Main Photo Credit: Rick Osentoski-Imagn Images

The Detroit Tigers bullpen has cost the team a lot of wins so far in 2026.
