The New York Yankees have followed a familiar formula in the last several seasons under manager Aaron Boone<\/a>. They will get off to a hot start in April and carry it into late May or early June. Then they hit the rocks. This season, they started much the same way, looking like the class of the American League in April and much of May, aside from the occasional hiccup. However, it looked as though they would finally avoid their annual slump, at least until June was over. Not so fast.<\/p>\n

Although New York had been playing well for most of the month, even with Aaron Judge injured<\/a>, they’ve hit a wall against their arch-rivals. Following a series win in Detroit, they have dropped the first three games of their weekend series to the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. With a potential sweep looming on Sunday and their AL East lead<\/a> now gone, the Yankees’ June swoon has arrived at the last minute. They have lost seven of their last 10 games, having lost their home series to the Cincinnati Reds before heading to Detroit this week.<\/p>\n

A Bad Weekend in Boston<\/h2>\n

Fresh off a series win and going to Beantown to face the last-place Red Sox, the Yankees should’ve been licking their chops for this series, and perhaps they were. But they’ve been humbled from the start, getting shut down by solid Red Sox pitching and being largely non-competitive across three games.<\/p>\n

In Thursday’s opener, the Yankees jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, aided by Jos\u00e9 Caballero<\/a>‘s solo shot in the fourth inning. However, they couldn’t hold the lead, largely due to shoddy defense behind Cam Schlittler<\/a>. Amid four Yankees errors, the Red Sox took the lead in the fifth inning and tacked on in the eighth, coming away with the 6-3 victory.<\/p>\n

On Friday, Boston lefty Payton Tolle<\/a> shut down the Yankees completely, even taking a perfect game into the sixth inning. They scored their only run on an RBI groundout in the eighth as the Sox won 6-1. On Saturday, the lineup didn’t fare much better against another southpaw, Jake Bennett<\/a>. Max Schuemann<\/a> provided the only offense for the Bombers with a solo homer in the fifth inning. By then, it was too late. Gerrit Cole<\/a> was not especially sharp, giving up four runs (including two homers) in the first three innings. Final score: 4-1 Red Sox.<\/p>\n

Held to one run so far today, the Yankees have managed just 25 runs across their last 10 games.<\/p>\n
